Ventura's Steen Zeman shot a 2-under par 70-72, 142 Monday at the Western State Conference Championships at Alisal River Golf Course in Solvang to claim individual medalist honors by three strokes, locking up the Player of the Year honors for the season. The Pirate team, meanwhile, posted a 369-367, 736 to wrap up the runner-up position in the WSC standings to advance to the SoCal Regionals in two weeks.
Ventura posted a team score of 369 in the morning round, finishing seven strokes behind Canyons in second place. Zeman placed second with a 2-under 70 while Nicholas Burns tied for seventh with a 1-over 73. Joshua Calderon carded a 2-over 74 to tie for ninth and Jonas Slattum's 3-over 75 was good for 11th place. Evan Colborn and Zack Garboski each turned in rounds of 77 to complete the strong play by the Pirates.
In the afternoon, VC finished with a bang, carding a score of 367 to defeat Canyons by two strokes to claim first place. Zeman and Burns each scored even par 72 to tie for second place in the round while Colborn and Garboski each tied for eighth with a 2-over 74. Slattum turned in a 3-over 75 and Calderon posted an 80.
Zeman claimed the overall title with a combined 2-under score of 142 while Burns tied for second at 145. Slattum tied for 12th with an overall score of 150.
With his performance Monday, Zeman was named the WSC Player of the Year, the first Pirate to earn the honor since Joey Herrera in 2017. Burns and Colborn were named All-WSC for having an average score in the Top-10 in the conference through the season. Head coach Chad Wright was named the WSC Coach of the Year.
Overall, the Pirates scored 736, just five strokes behind Canyons on the day. Citrus punched their ticket to the SoCal Regionals with a third-place 770. Glendale, who finished third in the overall season standings, will also compete as a team in the regionals on May 9 at Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura.
