Joey Herrera shot an even par round of 72, tied for fifth place individually, as the Pirate golf team carded a season-best 387 Monday to take second place at the Western State Conference event hosted by Citrus College at San Dimas Country Club. College of the Canyons ran away with the meet with a team score of 352, followed by VC (287) and Santa Barbara (388). The Pirates and Vaqueros are now tied for second place in the standings heading into the WSC Championships next week.
Denis Kakimoto and Adam Franc both shot a 2-over 74 while Jonathon Ortiz (83), Aaron Friedland (84) and Connor Philpott (86) rounded out the Pirate competitors.
Ventura and Santa Barbara sport identical 61-19 WSC records after 10 events. The 36-hole WSC Championships will be held on Monday April 30 at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano. The top two teams in the final standings, plus the highest-placing team from the WSC Finals will all qualify for the SoCal Regionals on May 7.
