The VC beach volleyball team opened Western State Conference play Friday with sweeps over Cuesta and Glendale at the Harbor Cove Courts. The Pirates' No. 1 pair of Autumn Rojelio and Kayla Murdoch won by over 11-points per set and the No. 3 team of Bryce Swain and Lily Hazzard had a big win against Cuesta in the opener. the No. 2 pair of Alba Romanos Gracia and Kylie Ibbotson also won a pair of matches on the court for Ventura (8-4, 2-0).
In the opener, Murdoch and Rojelio were dominant, taking a 21-9, 21-9 victory over the Cougars. Swain and Hazzard also produced a big win at No. 3, 21-4, 21-10. Romanos Gracia and Ibbotson took their No. 2 match 21-12, 21-13 and Gracie Piro and Gabby Raines won at No. 4, 21-10, 21-7. The Pirates' No. 5 pair Makena Schaumloeffel and Liz Schalde won by forfeit against Cuesta.
In the second match-up, Ventura was equally dominant against the shorthanded Vaqueros. Murdoch and Rojelio won 21-10, 21-9 while Ibbotson and Romanos Gracia were victorious, 21-5, 21-9. VC also won the Nos. 3, 4, and 5 matches by forfeit as the Glendale was unable to field pairs for those matches.
The Pirates next travel to Santa Monica on Friday March 22 to take on Moorpark and the host Corsairs.
