The Pirates' beach volleyball team split a pair of matches Wednesday in Long Beach. Ventura defeated San Diego Miramar 3-2 before falling to the hosts 5-0 in a match that was much closer than the final score indicates. Kayla Murdoch and Autumn Rojelio won their match against the Jets before dropping their match against LBCC in three sets. Makena Schaumloeffel and Liz Schalde had the same results on the day.
In an odd twist, Miramar defeated Long Beach in the first match of the day to leave each team 1-1 in their two respective match-ups.
In the first contest of the day, Murdoch and Rojelio swept their No. 1 match against the Jets 21-19, 23-21. Meanwhile Makena Schaumloeffel and Liz Schalde won their No. 5 slot, 21-10, 21-18. Alba Romanos Gracia and Kylie Ibbotson dropped a close, 3-set affair at No. 2, 21-10, 19-21, 17-15 and Bryce Swain and Lily Hazzard lost their No. 3 match against the Jets in straight sets. Gracie Piro and Gabby Raines clinched the victory for Ventura with a hard-fought 21-10, 16-21, 15-12 triumph at No. 4.
Despite a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Vikings, the Pirates kept things close in most of the contests. Murdoch and Rojelio, who outscored their opponents in the No. 1 match 49-47, easily won the first set 21-10 before LBCC came back to take the match 21-19 and 15-9. Schaumloeffel and Schalde prevailed in their first set at No. 5, 21-19 before falling in three, 21-19 and 15-8. Swain and Hazzard lost in straight sets but were only outscored by four points at No. 3 and Piro and Raines dropped their first set 23-21 before falling in the second against Long Beach in the fourth slot. Romanos Gracia and Ibbotson dropped their deciding second set 22-20, as well.
Ventura (5-3) next travels to El Camino on Friday mar. 1 to take on the host Warriors and Rio Hondo.
