On a nearly perfect day at the Ventura Marina, the Pirates' beach volleyball team swept two non-conference matches Friday on the Harbor Cove Courts. Ventura (7-4) defeated a club team from Los Angeles Pierce College 3-2 in the opening contest of the day before blanking a club team from Santa Monica College 5-0. the No. 5 duo of Daisy Martinez and Madison Wright swept through their No. 5 match in the opener, then teamed up with different partners to sweep through Nos. 4 and 5 in the second match of the day.
In the first match of the day against LA Pierce, the No. 1 pair of Tori Hiott and Paris Dosch won a three-set thriller, 21-17, 12-21, 15-11, and the No. 2 team of Mikayla Spears and Brianna Finch also won in three sets, 21-15, 17-21, 15-7. Martinez and Wright earned the other point for the Pirates with a straight sets victory, 21-12, 21-9.
Entertaining Santa Monica, the Pirates were not giving hosts, taking all five matches, four of them sweeps. Spears and Finch won at No. 2, 21-9, 21-14 while Sariah Flores and Armonee Hunter triumphed at No. 3, 21-17, 21-13. Janessa Simental and Wright were victorious at No. 4, 21-11, 21-11, and Martinez and Paulina Iverson won at No. 5, 21-7, 21-4. Hiott and Dosch maintained the drama for the second straight match, winning in three sets, 22-20, 19-21, 15-13.
Ventura opens Western State Conference play on Friday April 7 against Antelope Valley and Bakersfield. Action begins at 10:00 am at the Harbor Cove Courts at the Ventura Marina.
