Competing in the Western State Conference Coastal Meet in San Luis Obispo, the VC women placed second of five and the men third of four teams on Friday afternoon. Fresh off her record-setting performance a week ago, Alisha Greenlaw won three events and finished second in another to lead the women while Dylan Roberts led the men with a pair of golds.
Santa Barbara took the women's team title followed by the Pirates, Moorpark, Cuesta and Allan Hancock. Ventura finished 25 points off the win and could have kept the meet tantalizingly close had they not been disqualified for a relay violation. The overall point leader for VC was Greenlaw, a freshman from Rio Mesa, as she took first place in the 100m, 100m hurdles, and the triple jump and added second place efforts in the 200m. She was also a member of the 4x400 meter relay.
Brittany McWaid had a fine day in the throws as she scored two second place finishes in the shot put and discus, and two third place finishes in hammer and javelin. Jordyn Vassaur was fastest in the 3000m while Megan Kearney brougt home gold in the 800m. Emily Stephenson was runner up in both the long and triple jumps and Brigitte Kiesewetter finished second in both the 1500m and 3000m runs. Brittany Gonzalez placed third in the 1500m.
Santa Barbara also won the men's team title, with Cuesta, Ventura and Allan Hancock rounding out the scoring. For the second week in a row, Roberts swept the horizontal jumps with a first place finish in the long jump and a life-time best of 46'3.75" in the triple jump. Also joining Roberts as a top scorer was Montre Lee, who took first in the 100m, second in the 200m by a .01 seconds and anchoring the second place 4x400 meter relay. Sam Boyle placed second in the 800m andO'Cean Brown took third in the 400m hurdles rounding out the other Pirate men who were top-3 finishers.
"The scoring meets put us in a championship mindset and I like the way every place counts," commented head coach Tony Veney. "WSC prelims are only three weeks away and you want to be peaking at the right time."
Prior to the conference preliminaries on Friday April 17 at the VC Sportsplex, a select group of runners is awaiting an invitation to the Mt. SAC Relays welcoming the top-24 competitors in the state on Saturday April 11.
