Perez came to VC after a successful three-year stint as an assistant men's water polo coach at Los Angeles Valley College where he helped direct the Monarchs to three consecutive Western State Conference championships. During his time in Valley Glen, LAVC was 53-33 overall and 16-3 in WSC play. They advanced to the SoCal Regional Playoffs each season, winning at least one game in each draw. In 2015, LA Valley finished third in the SoCal Regionals and they were fourth in 2017.

A native of La Paz, Mexico, Perez has been playing water polo for 20 years. He began his playing career with a club representing his home state, helping them to five consecutive Mexican national championships. He also was a team captain and MVP of the Junior National team and had an eight-year run on the Mexican National Team. He represented his home country in various international events, including:

  • Pan American Games: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2007; and Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011 (team captain).
  • Centro American Games: Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in 2010 (finished third, team captain); and Veracruz, Mexico 2014, (gold medal team).
  • FINA Men’s Water Polo Olympic Game Qualification Tournament in 2008.
  • World University Games Belgrade, Serbia in 2009.

After finishing his bachelor's degree in 2010, Perez began coaching in the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico working with 14-U and 10-U teams.  He came to the US in 2013, playing for two seasons at Grossmont College in 2013 and 2014, earning All-American honors both seasons. He led the Griffins to a combined 38-14 mark, winning two straight Pacific Coast Conference titles.

He moved to Los Angeles in 2015, beginning his time at LA Valley, and he also coached with the LA Premier Water Polo Club.
