Ventura Swimmers & Divers Compete at PCC Invitational

The Pirates' men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the Pasadena Invitational held at East Los Angeles College Thursday through Saturday with the men placing third of nine teams and the women coming in seventh of 10. Carlos Gonzalez scored in four individual events for the VC men and Sarah Glassman led the Pirate women scoring in five individual events.

The Pirates' best finishes were Ayden Jacobus and his dual gold medals in the 1m and 3m diving competitions.

Gonzalez claimed a silver medal in the 1650-yard freestyle and touched fourth in the 500-yard free, seventh in the 400-yard individual medley and 10th in the 200-yard free.

Nick Santander also earned a medal, placing third in the 200-yard backstroke and he came in seventh in the 100-yard backstroke.

Luigi Travi was fourth and fifth in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke races and 13th in the 50-yard freestyle while Cameron Habib finished fourth, sixth and seventh in the 200-yard, 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, respectively. Kyle Quach came in sixth and eighth in the 200-yard and 100-yard backstroke events and 13th in the 200-yard individual medley.

Merrick Giles touched in sixth place in the 200-yard butterfly and 12th in the 50-yard freestyle while Fabian Morales was ninth in the 200-yard fly. Michael Soho came in 11th in the 100-yard fly and Alex Tamayo was 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke. Stephen McNaughten finished 14th in the 500-yard freestyle.

The men's relay teams turned in solid performances, as well. Giles, Tamayo, Travi and Santander were fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay while Travi, Gonzalez, McNaughten and Morales also came in fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Habib, Santander, Travi and McNaughten touched fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay and Santander, Soho, Travi and Habib were seventh in the 200-yard medley relay.

Glassman led the Ventura women with a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 1m and 3m diving events. She also scored by touching 13th in the 100-yard butterfly and 15th in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races.

Cassidy Yanca produced VC's best finish in the 200-yard freestyle, placing fourth, and she also came in fifth in the 1650-yard free and sixth in the 500-yard free. Meanwhile, Ava Carey placed fifth in the 400-yard individual medley, 10th in the 200-yard backstroke and 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Izabel Magana finished seventh in the 1m diving event and 15th in the 200-yard butterfly and Caitlyn Hilgenberg was ninth and 11th in the 200- and 100-yard backstroke, respectively.

The Pirates' women's relay team of Magana, Glassman, Hilgenberg and Yanca placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay while the quartet of Hilgenberg, Yanca, Magana and Carey were ninth in the 400-yard medley relay. Hilgenberg, Carey, Glassman and Yanca touched in ninth in the 200-yard medley relay for VC.

The Pirate men totaled 396 points to finish third behind Diablo Valley and El Camino and ahead of Pasadena and Los Angeles Pierce.

The VC women earned 215 points to come in behind Cypress and ahead of Fulleton. Diablo Valley also won the women's team title followed by LA Valley.

Ventura's divers next travel to Long Beach on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13 for the Western State Conference and Southern California Diving Championships. VC will then host the WSC Championships at the Ventura Aquatic Center on April 18-20.
