Ventura College freshmen swimmers Adrianna Bese and Cooper Fuchs both performed well at the CCCAA State Swimming Championships Thursday through Saturday at De Anza College in Cupertino. Bese set a new school record in the 200-yard breast stroke and placed in her only other event while Fuchs went three-for-three in events entered and events in which he scored points for the Pirates at the final competition of the season.
Bese saved her best performance for last, setting a new school record in her final race of the season on Saturday. In the 200-yard breast stroke, she touched in 2:29.91 to set a new school record in the event and finish in eighth place. On Friday, the Nordhoff High School graduate qualified for the finals in the 100-yard breast stroke, earning seventh place in 1:08.40, nearly a full second faster than her qualifying time from the morning. She earned 23 team points for VC in the championships.
Fuch, meanwhile, entered one event each day of the three-day event. On Friday he qualified for the finals of the 50-yard freestyle, placing sixth with a time of 20.91, less than a second behind the gold medal performance. Saturday, he swam the 100-yard backstroke, qualifying for the consolation finals and placing 10th in 53.07. Finally, on Saturday, Fuchs competed in the 100-yard freestyle, once again qualifying for the consolation finals. He touched in 46.64 in his final race of the season, also good for 10th place. The Westlake High School product earned 27 points in the championships for VC.
Orange Coast College claimed the state championships for both the men and the women. VC finished in 21st place in the men's standings out of 40 schools with competitors while the women were 22nd out of 41 teams.
