Pirates Return to Pool With a Pair of Dual Wins

VC freshman Caitlin Potter had three individual golds and was also part of two winning relays for the Pirates as they defeated Allan Hancock College in a dual 160-60 Saturday in the 2021 season opener. The VC men also defeated the Bulldogs 116-95.

Ventura College's men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to competition on Saturday with a pair of dual wins against visiting Allan Hancock College. The Pirate women defeated the Bulldogs 160-60 while the men's team won over AHC 116-95. Caitlin Potter led the women with three individual wins and a pair of relay golds while Arturo Medina also posted a trio of gold medal individual finishes along with two firsts in relays.

Potter claimed gold in three individual events including the 200 yard individual medley, (2:26.69), 100 yard backstroke (1:04.79) and 50 yard backstroke (30.16). Additionally she teamed up with Sierra Limneos, Megan Findlay and Kiran Shah to win both the 200 yard medley relay (2:04.56) and 400 yard freestyle relay (4:10.02). 

Limneos finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:18.06) and the 200 yard freestyle (2:12.21) and also claimed silver in the 200 yard IM. Meanwhile, Shah posted a pair of individual wins in the 50 yard (27.96) and 100 yard (103.01) freestyle events.  Findlay claimed the women's other win in the 100 yard butterfly (1:09.87). She also was second in the 50 free and third in the 100 yard free.

Lauren Mora placed in three events finishing second in the 50 free and third in both the 100 back and 200 free. Lauren Pierce claimed silver in the 100 yard breaststroke and bronze in the 50 breaststroke and Emmie Johnson was second in the 50 yard fly. Lindsey Valdez touched in second in the 50 yard breaststroke.

Medina led the VC men with victories in the 200 yard IM (2:09.65), 100 yard backstroke (59.74) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:03.44). He also teamed with Brayden Lauritzen, Roman Becher and Collin Spargur to win the 200 yard medley relay (1:44.37) and with Nathan Blok, Lauritzen and Spargur to claim the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:34.80).

Spargur won two golds in the 50 yard free (22.52) and 100 yard fly (58.46) while finishing second in the 100 yard free. Lauritzen had the Pirates' other win in the 50 yard breaststroke (29.98) while coming in second in the 100 yard breast and third in the 200 yard IM.

Blok also placed in three events, touching second in the 100 yard and 200 yard free and third in the 100 yard backstroke. Becher was second in the 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard butterfly events.

Ventura returns to the pool on Saturday April 24 with a home meet against Santa Monica. The events begin at 11:00 am at Rio Mesa High School.
