2018 Ventura College Football Team News

  • VC Football Transfers 31 From 2018 SCFA Champions
    August 12, 2019
    Ventura College football head coach Steve Mooshagian has announced that 31 players from the 2018 SCFA champions have inked scholarships or committed to play at four-year schools.  Among the Pirate transfers, 17 have inked with NCAA Division I schools, 12 playing in the Football Bowl Series with five in the Football Championship Series, and 10 are transferring to NCAA Division II schools. With the addition of these transfers, coach Mooshagian has now helped 234 student athletes move on to the four-year level.

  • Ventura Tops SCFA With Scholar Athlete Recognition
    March 03, 2019
    For the third year in a row, and for the fourth time in the past five years, the Pirate football team has topped the Southern California Football Association's Scholar-Athlete team. VC has placed a program-best 20 players on the honor roll, led by offensive lineman Dane Nelson with a 3.95 Grade Point Average and by tight ends Trennan Carlson and Jared Thomsen at 3.58 and 3.54, respectively. All of these honorees have also been nominated for Academic All-State. The Pirates achieved a 3.01 GPA as a team in the fall, posting an 11-2 record while capturing the school's first ever SCFA Championship, advancing to the CCCAA state championship game in December.
  • Pirate Football Announces 13 Signees in Class of 2018

    Ventura College football and head coach Steve Mooshagian has announced that 13 players from the 2018 Southern California Football Association champions have inked scholarships or committed to play at four-year schools.  Among the mid-year transfers, early signees, and signing period commits, Nine have inked with NCAA Division I schools, six playing in the Football Bowl Series with three in the Football Championship series, and four will transfer to NCAA Division II schools.
  • Breslin, Duckett and Watson Named CCCFCA All-Americans
    December 25, 2018
    The post season awards continue to roll in for the Pirate football team as offensive lineman Scott Breslin, running back Thomas Duckett and defensive back Jaylen Watson were all named California Community College Football Coaches Association First Team All-Americans as released by the JC Athletic Bureau on Tuesday. The three led the Pirates to the best finish in the 94-year history of Ventura College football, an 11-2 overall record, the Southern California Football Association championship, and a state runner-up finish.
  • Mooshagian Selected as 2018 National Coach of the Year
    December 19, 2018
    Ventura College Head Coach Steve Mooshagian has been named the 2018 American Community College Football Coaches Association (ACCFCA) Coach of the Year. The award will be presented to Mooshagian during the American Football Coaches Awards ceremony on Tuesday, January 8, at the 2019 AFCA Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
  • Pirate Comeback Just Short in CCCAA Championship Game
    December 08, 2018
    The Ventura College football team ended the greatest season in school history just short, 13 yards short. Driving for a potential championship-winning score, time ran out on the Pirates 13 yards shy of the end zone Saturday as they fell in the CCCAA State Championship game in Sacramento 40-35 to Laney College.
  • VC Football Set to Take State's Biggest Stage
    December 07, 2018
    It does't get any bigger than this. In the 90-plus years of Ventura College football, the Pirates have never played for a state title, until Saturday. The 2018 California Community College Athletic Association football season will reach its conclusion when the Southern California champion Ventura Pirates (11-1) will take on Northern California champion Laney College (10-2) at 1:00 pm at Sacramento's historic Hughes Stadium.   • Thomas Duckett Leads Pirates' SCFA Honorees
    December 06, 2018
    Ventura running back Thomas Duckett was named the Southern California Football Association National Division, Northern League Offensive Player of the Year in voting by the conference coaches last month. The sophomore from Pacifica High School leads 22 all-conference selections for VC, who will take to the field one final time in 2018 on Saturday against Laney College for the 2018 CCCAA State Championship in Sacramento.
  • Pirate Football Will Play For One More in State Title Game
    November 24, 2018
    Already in uncharted territory, the Pirate football team continued its journey to "Play for More" Saturday night with a 31-21 victory at Riverside City College in the Southern California Football Association championship game. Wide receiver Brandon Jordan had six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown to earn Most Valuable Player honors, and defensive back Jaylen Watson had a team-high nine tackles to earn Defensive Player of the Game accolades as the Pirates advance to the CCCAA State Championship to be played Saturday Dec. 8 in Sacramento against Laney College.
  • Pirates Wrap Up First Ever Football Playoff Victory
    November 17, 2018
    The Pirate football team turned the tables on previously undefeated Canyons, turning a blocked punt and two turnovers into 21 points in their 21-13 Southern California Football Association semifinal victory over the No. 1-seeded Cougars Saturday night. Trennan Carlson (punt block, forced fumble), Dewayne Coleman (fumble recovery) and Jaylen Watson (interception) all provided key plays in the victory and Thomas Duckett ran for 137 yards on offense to lead Ventura (10-1) to the program's first ever football playoff victory.
  • Pirate Football Makes Third Straight SCFA Final Four
    November 12, 2018
    The Southern California Football Association announced the four-team field for the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs on Sunday. The Ventura Pirates (9-1) earned the only at-large selection into the SCFA Final Four, along with three conference champions, Canyons (10-0), Riverside (10-0) and El Camino (8-2). This is the third straight SCFA playoff appearance for the Pirates and the program's fourth in the past five seasons.
  • Pirates Hold Off Long Beach For 9-1 Regular Season Mark
    November 10, 2018
    The Pirate football team held off a strong effort from Long Beach City College 33-31 at the Sportsplex on Saturday night,finishing the regular season with a 9-1 mark. Thomas Duckett was superb with 216 yards rushing on 31 carries while Travis Koontz had eight pass receptions for 49 yards, including three touchdowns. Kegan Romero had two interceptions, Dondre Baker recorded nine tackles, and Jaylen Watson had eight stops and four pass break-ups on defense for Ventura (9-1, 4-1).
  • Football Rolls Past ELAC, Mooshagian Ties All-Time Mark
    November 03, 2018
    The Pirate football team racked up 512 yards of total offense in rolling past East Los Angeles 39-13 Saturday night in Monterey Park. Thomas Duckett rushed for three touchdowns and Brock Domann accounted for 203 yards of total offense, 160 through the air and 43 on the ground. Meanwhile, the VC defense produced two safeties and limited the Huskies to 187 yards of total offense. With the triumph, head coach Steve Mooshagian tied former VC coach Dick James (1970-79, 90-92) as the winningest coach in program history with 66 career victories.
  • Turnovers Costly in Pirates' Loss at Canyons
    October 27, 2018
    The Pirate football team got bit by the turnover bug, bad. VC had four interceptions and two fumbles lost leading to 24 Cougar points in the fourth-ranked Pirates' 31-7 loss at No. 3 College of the Canyons Saturday in Santa Clarita. Running back Thomas Duckett managed to gain 103 yards on 17 carries and quarterback Brock Domann had 43 yards on eight caries with a touchdown. But the giveaways were too much for VC (6-2, 2-1) to overcome ending a 17-game conference winning streak dating back to 2015.
  • Huge First Half Helps Pirates Lift Citrus Cup
    October 20, 2018
    The 51st Citrus Cup game between Ventura and Moorpark ended up being the most one-sided for the Pirates. VC scored in a variety of ways Saturday night at the Sportsplex en route to a 62-7 victory over their cross-county rivals, setting a series record for a Ventura margin of victory in the process. The Pirate defense forced five Raider turnovers, and the VC special teams scored three touchdowns in the rout, sending No. 3-ranked Ventura (6-1, 2-0) into next week's showdown at No. 1 Canyons.
  • VC Football Rolls Past Bakersfield in Conference Opener
    October 13, 2018
    In a deceptively dominant performance, the Pirate football team rolled past Bakersfield 23-10 in their Northern Conference opener Saturday night at the Sportsplex. Haden Nease rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown and Brock Domann came off the bench at quarterback to run for 116 yards and pass for 82 more to lead the charge. The VC defense also had a strong performance holding the Renegades to 248 yards of offense and generating three turnovers in the victory for Ventura (5-1, 1-0).
  • VC Pushes Top-Ranked Fullerton to the Brink
    September 29, 2018
    It had all the build-up of a No. 1 versus No. 2 showdown,and lived up to the hype. The No. 2-ranked Ventura College football team traveled to No. 1 Fullerton Saturday and gave the Hornets all they wanted before falling on a late touchdown, 33-28 at Yorba Linda High School Stadium. Quarterback Brock Domann led VC (4-1) back from a 20-7 halftime deficit to a 28-20 advantage early in the final period before the Hornets came from behind in the end.
  • Ventura Holds on to Defeat Palomar, Sets Up Showdown
    September 22, 2018
    For the second straight week the Pirate football team raced out to a comfortable lead, only to let their opponent back into the game late. And for the fourth straight week, the Pirates were victorious, defeating Palomar 45-38 Saturday at the VC Sportsplex Saturday night. With the win to open the season 4-0 for the first time since 2012, No. 3-ranked Ventura has set up a showdown at No. 1 Fullerton next week.
  • Pirates Escape Hancock With Win, Move to 3-0
    September 15, 2018
    On an afternoon when things seemed to piling up against the Ventura College football team, the Pirates found a way to pull out the victory. Running back Thomas Duckett took a swing pass from quarterback Brock Domann, broke a pair of would-be tackles, and sprinted 62 yards down the sideline with 1:07 left in the game, and kicker Ian Henzi converted the extra point kick to give VC (3-0) a 29-28 victory over Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria.
  • Football Honors Daley, Runs Over Saddleback in Home Opener
    September 08, 2018
    A night that began with reflection and rememberence ended with celebration Saturday at the Ventura College Sportsplex. The Pirate football team honored the memory of alumnus and former assistant coach Brenden Daley who died in the off season before the game, then proceeded to rack up 246 rushing yards in their 34-19 victory over visiting Saddleback. Running back Thomas Duckett led the ground offensive with 152 rushing yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Jay Vanderjagt threw for 203 yards and two more scores in the Pirate victory.
