Godina, Torres Lead VC Women's XC Awards, Tienda Leads MenDecember 02, 2023Sophia Godina earned the Western State Conference's Female Runner of the Year Award while teammate Brianna Torres was named first team All-WSC following the 2023 conference championships on Oct. 20. Erick Tienda led the Pirates' men's award winners with his first team All-WSC honor for his efforts in the 2023 season.

Godina Claims Silver at State Finals; Women 15th, Men 16thNovember 18, 2023Sophia Godina put a silver crown on her Ventura College cross country career Saturday, claiming a close second at the 3C2A State Championships in Fresno. The sophomore ran the 5k course in Woodward Park in 17:56.06, just 1.29 seconds off the winning mark to win the silver medal in the final event of the season. Godina's effort led the Pirate women to a 15th place state finish as a team while the VC men finished in 16th place against the best teams from around the state.

VC Men's and Women's XC Qualify for StateNovember 03, 2023For the third straight year under coach Martin Maciel, the Pirates' men's and women's cross country teams have qualified for the 3C2A State Championships. Both teams placed 13th in a crowded Southern California regional field Friday in Long Beach to move forward to the final meet of the year. Sophia Godina ran in second place out of 158 runners to lead the women and Brianna Torres was 16th. Erick Tienda and Adrian Valdez were 14th and 25th of 189 competitors, respectively, for the Ventura men.

Godina is WSC Champ, VC Harriers Finish 3rd,4th at WSC FinalsOctober 20, 2023VC sophomore Sofia Godina claimed the individual Western State Conference title for the Pirate women Friday as she and her teammates placed fourth overall at the conference championships in Woodland Hills Friday. The Pirate men came in third as a team, led by Erick Tienda's 12th place finish as the two teams had their best combined team placings since the 2017 season. Both squads easily qualified for the Southern California Regional Championships on Nov. 3 in Long Beach.

Godina Wins WSC Preview as XC Teams Finish 4th/5thSeptember 29, 2023Sophia Godina continued her stellar campaign Friday winning the Western State Conference Cross Country Preview meet in Oxnard. She and Brianna Torres, who finished fifth overall, led the Pirate women to a fifth place team finish. Meanwhile, Adrian Valdez and Erick Tienda ran in fifth and sixth place, respectively, for the VC men as the Pirates came in fourth as a team at the conference preview.

Cross Country Produces Top-10 Finishes at SoCal PreviewSeptember 15, 2023The Pirates' men's and women's cross country teams both earned Top-10 finished as a team Friday at the SoCal Preview meet at El Dorado Park in Long Beach. The men were sixth of the 33 teams running while the women placed ninth of 31 teams. Sophia Godina won the women's race and Brianna Torres came in 12th overall while Erick Tienda paced the men in ninth place and Adrian Valdez came in 19th.

Harriers Open Season at Seawolf Invite in FresnoSeptember 02, 2023The VC women's and men's cross country teams opened their seasons Saturday at the Seawolf Invitational hosted by Sonoma State in Fresno's Woodward Park. Sofia Godina won the women's race featuring 44 runners from four-year schools. Meanwhile, Erick Tienda led the Pirate men with a 20th place finish against 37 athletes competing, also all from four-year programs.

Pirate Student Athletes Prominent on Dean's Lists for 22-23August 07, 2023Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2022-23, achieving an overall 3.29 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a 3.19 overall GPA in the spring semester. A total of 108 Pirates achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher, earning mention on the Dean's List in the fall 2022 term while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 53 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In spring 2023, 110 VC student athletes were named on the Dean's List with 45 posting perfect GPA's.

Ventura Harriers End Season at State ChampionshipsNovember 19, 2022The VC men's and women's cross country teams completed their 2022 seasons at the CCCAA State Championships in Fresno on Saturday. The Pirate men finished 12th in the 21-team field while the women came in 16th. Sofia Godina paced the women in 18th place overall while Joshua Weinerth was the top finished for the men in 42nd.

Men's and Women's Cross Country Headed to StateNovember 04, 2022The Pirates' men's and women's cross country teams both qualified for the CCCAA State Championships with their performances Friday in the Southern California Regionals in Bakersfield. The VC men came in eighth of 28 competing teams, easily making the cut while the women came in under the wire in 14th place of the 18 competing squads. Sophia Godina led the women with a 6th-place finish individually while Adrian Valdez finished 10th in the men's race.

Ventura Cross Country Teams Qualify for SoCal'sOctober 21, 2022The Pirates' men's and women's cross country teams both qualified fo rthe Southern California regionals Friday with strong showings at the Western State Conference Championships in Moorpark Friday. The VC men placed fourth of 11 scoring teams while the women came in sixth of the eight teams in the meet. Joshua Weinerth, Adrian Valdez and Erick Tienda paced the men in seventh, 10th and 11th place, respectively while Sophia Godina came in fourth for the Ventura women to lead the crew.

Pirate XC Runs Strong at WSC PrwviewSeptember 30, 2022The VC men's and women's cross country teams had another strong performance at the Western State Conference preview Friday at Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills. In the meet hosted by LA Mission College, the Pirate men were fourth of the 10 competing teams led by Adrian Valdez, Ramiro Mateos and Erick Tienda all in the Top-17. Meanwhile Sophia Godina finished third in the women's race to lead Ventura.

Pirate Harriers Compete at SoCal PreviewSeptember 23, 2022The VC men's and women's cross country teams ran at the Southern California Preview meet Friday in Bakersfield. The Pirate men finished eight of the 25 participating teams led by Adrian Valdez who finished11th of the 247 runners. The Ventura women had four competitors, led by Sophia Godina who crossed the finish line fourth of the 138 runners, and she was also the top-performing freshman in the field.

In the meet hosted by Sonoma State against primarily four-year competition, the Pirate women were led by freshman Sofia Godia while Adrian Valdez paced the men.

Pirate Athletics Returns for 2022-23August 24, 2022After a banner year for Ventura College athletics in 2021-22, the Pirates are back in action to start the 2022-23 academic year. The season starts on Friday Aug. 26 with VC volleyball hosting its annual Kick-Off Tri with matches against Copper Mountain at 12:00 noon and versus Imperial Valley at 5:00 pm in the Athletic Event Center. The Pirate soccer team also kicks off Friday hosting College of the Canyons at 5:00 pm at the VC Sportsplex. Tickets for both teams' home contests are available online at https://ventura.vbotickets.com/events and can be bought and printed at home. Additionally, fans can scan a QR code at the door and purchase tickets on their smart device.

Pirate Student Athletes Strong in the ClassroomAugust 19, 2022Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2021-22, achieving an overall 3.26 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a solid 3.19 overall GPA in the spring. A total of 123 Pirates earned Dean's List honors in the fall of 2021 with a 3.5 GPA or better while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 51 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In the spring, 112 VC student athletes were featured on the Dean's List with 41 posting perfect GPA's.

Stina Runs 3rd, VC Men, Women, 12th, 14th at State ChampionshipsNovember 20, 2021VC sophomore Stina Johansson completed a stellar season finishing third at the CCCAA State Cross Country Championships Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. Her efforts led the VC women to a 14th place finish overall. Meanwhile, the Pirate men came in 12th place as a team, behind a 40th place finish by Isaiah Slagboom.

Men's and Women's Corss Country Qualifies for StateNovember 05, 2021For the first time since 2017, both the men's and women's cross country teams have qualified for the CCCAA State Championships. The Pirate men finished 10th on Friday and the women were 12th at the Southern California Championships in Fountain Valley, sending both teams to Fresno in two weeks. Stina Johansson came in second overall for the women while Isaiah Slagboom led the men, finishing in 24th place overall.

Men's and Women's Cross Country Qualify for RegionalsOctober 22, 2021Both the Ventura College men's and women's cross country teams qualified for the SoCal Regionals on Friday with strong showings at the Western State Conference Championships. Running at Legg Lake Park in South El Monte, the Pirate men were fourth overall in the conference while the women came in sixth. Stina Johansson led the women with a runner-up finish on the 5k course while Isaiah Slagboom was the lead Pirate for the men placing 7th over 4 miles.

Pirate Cross Country Competes at WSC PreviewOctober 01, 2021Getting closer to a full contingent of runners, the VC men's and women's cross country teams ran in the Western State Conference Preview Friday at Moorpark College. Isaiah Slagboom made his VC debut finishing fifth overall in the men's race leading Ventura to a fourth-place finish as a team. Stina Johansson paced the women finishing second overall.

VC Harriers Run In UC Riverside InvitationalSeptember 18, 2021With a small group of runners, the Pirates' men's and women's cross country teams had some impressive debut performances at the UC Riverside Invitational Saturday. Stina Johansson was the lone female competitor Saturday for VC, placing eighth overall in the Open Division race, first among community college runners.. For the men, Joshua Weinerth and Alex Canales also made their orange and black debut, coming in 55th and 77th, respectively, sixth and eighth among 2-year competitors.

Pirate Cross Country Opens Season in FresnoSeptember 04, 2021The Pirates' men's cross country team opened the 2021 season with a small contingent at the Fresno Invitational Saturday morning. Ventura ran four athletes in the race and did not qualify for a team score, but still had some solid individual performances. Ramiro Mateos led VC, finishing in 36th place out of 115 runners while Sahit Jimenez followed in 43rd.

VC's Fall Sports Returns to CompetitionAugust 26, 2021Ventura College's fall sports return to competition on Friday August 27. When the Pirate volleyball team takes the court against Monterey Peninsula at 12:30 pm in the LA Mission Kickoff Classic it will mark the Pirates' first official fall sports contest in 21 months. The VC women's soccer team opens its 2021 season on Sunday Aug. 29 at Mt. San Antonio College beginning a full week of games in Pirate Athletics' return.

VC Athletics Transfers 36 Student Athletes to 4-Year Schools in '21August 11, 2021In a year like no other with online learning, season cancelations and COVID-shortened schedules, Ventura College Athletics still transferred 36 student athletes to four-year schools for the 2020-21 academic year, as of August 10. Of those transfers, 19 plan on continuing competing in their sport(s) across all divisions of intercollegiate competition. There were 15 transfers who received athletic scholarships while 20 received academic aid to their new school.

Pirates Excel Academically in 2021 Spring SemesterJune 08, 2021Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in the spring semester, achieving an overall 3.22 grade point average. A total of 106 Pirates earned Dean's List honors by posting at least a 3.5 GPA in 12 or more units of study, with 49 of them recording a perfect 4.0 GPA of all A's. Of VC's 19 intercollegiate athletic teams, 17 earned an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.

Women's XC Claims Pirates' 40th Scholar Team AwardMarch 10, 2021For the 21st consecutive year, at least one Ventura College athletic team has been recognized for academic achievement by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA). The organization released its team and individual scholar awards for the 2019-20 this week, and the Pirates' women's cross country team has been named a CCCAA State Scholar Team. This is the 40th VC team to receive the highest academic team award given annually in each CCCAA sport since the program's inception in 1997-98.

99 Students Athletes on Dean's List; 13 Teams Above 3.0January 07, 2021Student athletes at Ventura College continued to achieve academic honors in the fall 2020 semester with 99 of them earning a spot on VC's Dean's List by posting a 3.5 or better grade point average in 12 or more units. Of those honores, 47 earned perfect 4.0 GPA's signifying all A's in their classes. Meanwhile, 13 of the Pirates' 19 intercollegiate athletic teams achieved an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
