Pirate Student Athletes Prominent on Dean's Lists for 22-23August 07, 2023Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2022-23, achieving an overall 3.29 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a 3.19 overall GPA in the spring semester. A total of 108 Pirates achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher, earning mention on the Dean's List in the fall 2022 term while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 53 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In spring 2023, 110 VC student athletes were named on the Dean's List with 45 posting perfect GPA's.

Awards Keep Rolling in for VC's CalvinJune 15, 2023The post-season awards keep rolling in for Pirate sophomore Reiss Calvin. After turning in one of the all-time best seasons and careers in VC baseball history, the VC shortstop has now been named to the 2023 ABCA/Rawlings Pacific Association Division All-Region and All-American teams. Calvin, from Woodbury, Minn., was named first team All-Region and first team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Murdoch, Calvin Earn Athlete of the Year Awards for 22-23June 12, 2023Volleyball and beach volleyball standout Kayla Murdoch and baseball star Reiss Calvin have been named the 2022-23 Ventura College Athletics Athletes of the Year. Recognized at the VC Athletic Hall of Fame and Student Athlete recognition Banquet last month, the pair each had record-setting seasons in their respective sports to earn the Pirates' top athletic honor.

2022-23 Scholar Athletes HonoredMay 30, 2023The Ventura College Athletic Department honored its outstanding scholar athletes for the 2022-23 year earlier this month at the annual VC Athletic Hall of Fame and Student Athlete Recognition Banquet. Gage Allen (baseball) received the Male Scholar Athlete Award while Lauren Albrent (Softball), Kylie Gallick (Basketball) and Maggie Mordecai (Soccer) were all named Female Schola Athletes for the year. All four achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average for two years at Ventura College.

Veteran Coach David Soliz Takes Helm of Pirate BaseballMay 23, 2023Longtime Rio Mesa High School baseball coach David Soliz has been tabbed to lead the Ventura College baseball program. Soilz, a 23-year skipper for the Spartans from 1999-2022, takes over for interim head coach and Pirate Athletic Director Jimmy Walker, who stepped in to lead the program after the late departure of former coach Cole Mahoney-Bruer.

Calvin Named Player of the Year in WSC NorthMay 17, 2023Pirate sophomore Reiss Calvin leads the VC contingent on the All-Western State Conference North Division team for the 2023 season as the league's Player of the Year. Sophomore catcher Andrew Savage and freshman outfielder Mason Reid each earned second team All-WSCN honors as voted upon by the conference coaches following the season.

Baseball Ends Season with VictoryApril 29, 2023The Pirate baseball team ended the 2023 season with an 8-1 victory over LA Pierce Saturday at Pirate Park. Yuki Kawashima had three hits and scored two runs while Matthew Beach recorded three hits with a run scored and one run batted in. Reiss Calvin scored twice in hist home finale. Jared Hughes pitched five scoreless innings to pick up the win as Ventura maintains a glimmer of hope for a post-season berth finishing in fourth place in the Western State Conference North Division at 12-12 in league play.

Pirates Hold Off Bulldogs to Split Season SeriesApril 28, 2023VC sophomore Reiss Calvin continued his stellar season hitting 3-5 with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in and Gage Allen was 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored as Ventura held off Hancock 10-7 Friday at Pirate Park. Cooper Smith had a quality start for the victory, throwing seven innings and giving up three runs, two earned on eight hits. The triumph gave Ventura (16-23, 11-12) a season split with the Bulldogs.

Pirates on Short End Against Santa BarbaraApril 25, 2023It was a struggle form the beginning Tuesday at Pirate Park as the VC baseball team was on the short end of a 15-3 decision against Santa Barbara. Reiss Calvin was a triple shy of the cycle, batting 3-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in and Haiden Letzing recorded a pair of hits with an RBI.

VC Earns Season Sweep Over Condors wIth WinApril 22, 2023The Pirate baseball team made it a perfect 4-0 over Oxnard this season with a 3-1 12-inning win on the road Saturday afternoon. Reiss Calvin had a pair of hits with a stolen base and a run scored for Ventura (15-22, 2\10-11) and Yuki Kawashima scored th game-winning run in the top of the 12th. Jared Hughes pitched five scoreless frames in the start and Logan Knight followed, allowing one run while pitching into the 11th inning. Sebastian Garcia got credit for the win on the mound and Livio Bundy got the save.

Baseball Falls Short Against CuestaApril 20, 2023The Pirate baseball team fell behind 5-0 and 8-1 to visiting Cuesta Thursday afternoon before a five-run eighth inning got VC back into he game, they fell short in the comeback, however, dropping the 9-6 decision to the Cougars. Omar Santamaria continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-3, including a double, with a stolen base, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Reiss Calvin was 2-4 with a stolen base, one run scored and two RBI. Harrison Cordeiro and Sebastian Garcia each pitched scoreless innings in relief.

Ventura Defeats Moorpark in Extra's, Evens Season SeriesApril 18, 2023The VC baseball team scored twice in the top of the 10th inning to post a 7-5 victory at Moorpark, evening the season series with the Raiders at 2-2. Andrew Savage hit a sacrifice fly to score Haiden Letzing and Gage Allen singled home Caden Stillwell in the extra frame for the winning margin and Sebastian Garcia recorded the final out for the save. Stillwell totaled three hits in the contest while Connor Hickey and Mason Reid each had two runs batted in. Hunter Jones made the start giving up four runs, two earned through eight innings.

Pirates Fall to Brahmas in Back-and-Forth GameApril 15, 2023The Pirates' baseball team and LA Pierce combined to score in 11 of the 18 half-innings Saturday in Woodland Hills with VC coming up on the short side of an 8-7 decision in the final meeting of their three-game set. There were three ties and a pair of lead changes in the contest in which seven Pirates had two hits each. Haiden Letzing was one with a pair of hits and he also knocked in a run while Mason Reid had two hits with two runs scored and an RBI. Yuki Kawashima and Omar Santamaria each doubled in the game.

VC Posts Two Big Wins Over PierceApril 13, 2023The Pirate baseball team posted back-to-back double-digit wins over Los Angeles Pierce this week, defeating the Brahmas 14-4 on Tuesday in Woodland Hills before belting their way to a 19-3 victory Thursday at Pirate Park. Mason Reid had five hits and four runs batted in over the two games while Reiss Calvin was 4-9 with six runs scored and four RBI. Hunter Jones pitched into the ninth inning for the victory on Tuesday and Cooper Smith threw into the eighth on Thursday for the "W" for the Pirates (13-20, 8-9).

Baseball Makes Another Late ChargeApril 06, 2023The VC baseball team made a late charge for he second straight day, but cam up a run short Thursday, falling at Mt. San Jacinto 6-5. The Pirates came back from a 4-1 deficit after five innings, and had the game-tying run on third base when the side was retired in the top of the ninth. Yuki Kawashima had an RBI triple in the ninth inning and scored a run earlier in the game while Haiden Letzing had a hit with two runs scored. Reiss Calvin and Connor Hickey also recorded a hit and a run scored in the game.

Pirate Comeback Falls Short at Rio HondoApril 05, 2023The Pirate baseball team fell behind 7-0 after four innings of play at Rio Hondo on Wednesday before staging a strong comeback in their 11-9 setback against the Roadrunners. Caden Stillwell had two doubles, scored twice and knocked in one run while Reiss Calvin had two hits, including a double, with three runs scored and an RBI. Omar Santamaria also knocked in a pair of runs for Ventura (11-19, 6-9) in the non-conference make-up game in Whittier.

Ventura Falls to MSJC at Pirate ParkApril 04, 2023It was not a good day for the Pirates Tuesday, as they dropped a 10-0 decision to Mt. San Jacinto at Pirate Park. Ventura (11-18, 6-9) had baserunners in each of the first five innings with only one advancing to scoring position. VC had two baserunners in the eighth frame, but could not find the clutch hit to bring home a score against the No. 12-ranked team in Southern California.

VC Searches for Clutch Hit in Setback to AHCApril 01, 2023The Pirate baseball team had 15 hits, had runners on base in eight innings and moved them to scoring position in seven frames, yet could only score four runs in three columns in their 8-4 loss to Allan Hancock Saturday at Pirate Park. Reiss Calvin had three hits, stole a base, and scored twice in the game and Haiden Letzing also had three hits with an RBI. Omar Santamaria recorded three hits, including a double for Ventura (11-17, 6-9).

Pirate Baseball Drops Contest in Santa MariaMarch 31, 2023The Pirate baseball team's streak of 20 scoreless innings by the pitching staff came to a quick end Friday as VC dropped a 9-2 decision to Allan Hancock in Santa Maria. Ventura yielded two runs each in the first two innings in the setback. Mason Reid led VC (11-16, 6-8) at the plate with three hits, including a pair of doubles, with one run scored and one run batted in. Reiss Calvin also had three hits with a run scored on the day.

Ventura Shuts Out Hancock in Santa MariaMarch 28, 2023VC pitchers Wilson Spinks, Sebastian Garcia and Logan Knight combined to scatter seven hits and allow no runs in the Pirates' 6-0 shutout win at Allan Hancock College Tuesday. Matthew Beach was 2-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored while Connor Hickey and Gage Allen each recorded a hit with two runs batted in and a run scored. Haiden Letzing and Yuki Kawashima also recorded two hits apiece for Ventura (11-15, 6-7).

Pirates Blank Roadrunners in Return to BaseballMarch 25, 2023After a week of sketchy weather and wet fields, the Pirate baseball team returned to action under sunny skies and cool ocean breezes Saturday at Pirate Park as Hunter Jones and Cooper Smith combined to allow three hits in VC's 4-0 shutout victory over Rio Hondo. Reiss Calvin was 2-3 with a walk, three stolen bases, a run batted in and a run scored while Gage Allen had a pair of hits, including a double, and an RBI to power Ventura (10-15, 5-7).

VC Pitching Strong, Bats Silent in Weekend SeriesMarch 18, 2023The Pirates' baseball team received several strong pitching performances in their weekend series against Santa Barbara, but they had trouble scoring runs as VC dropped their three-game set against the Vaqueros. The Pirates fell by scores of 2-1 and 1-0 Saturday before falling 5-4 Sunday at Pirate Park. Hunter Jones and Cooper Smith both had outstanding starts on the mound of VC Saturday and Jared Hughes was solid for Ventura on Sunday, despite the three setbacks in the series.

Pirates Sweep Series Against OxnardMarch 13, 2023The Pirate baseball team battled its way to an 8-5 win over Oxnard Monday, sweeping the rain-delayed three-game series over the Condors. Connor Hickey had three hits, including a triple and pair of doubles, with two runs scored and a run batted in and Mason Reid was 2-4 with two RBI. Logan Knight came on in relief and pitched five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, while striking out five to pick up the win.

Smith Shuts Down Condors in 14-2 Pirate WinMarch 09, 2023VC pitcher Cooper Smith allowed one hit through seven complete innings of work, striking out seven and walking one as the Pirate baseball team ran away from Oxnard Thursday. Reiss Calvin and Mason Reid each homered and Aaron McLeod had four runs batted in for Ventura (8-12, 4-4) as they claimed their second straight against the Condors.

Seven-Run Eighth Lifts VC Baseball Over OxnardMarch 07, 2023The Pirate baseball team scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth Tuesday to turn pull away from Oxnard 14-9 at Pirate Park. Haiden Letzing delivered a two-RBI double in the frame as VC added to its two-run seventh to come from behind for the win. Yuki Kawashima had three hits and scored twice to lead Ventura (7-12, 3-4) and Mason Reid had a pair of doubles with two runs batted in and three runs scored. Hunter Jones pitched four innings in relief, giving up three earned runs to pick up the win.

Ventura Drops Conference Game in SLOMarch 06, 2023After giving up four runs in the first inning, the Pirates' baseball team kept their game at Cuesta close into the seventh before the Cougars broke the game open in VC's 12-4 setback in San Luis Obispo Monday. Reiss Calvin had another solid day with a double and solo home run, a walk, two runs scored and one run batted in. Mason Reid recorded an RBI double and scored once while Andrew Savage belted out three hits with an RBI. Christian Herrera and Sebastian Garcia each had scoreless frames on the mound for VC (6-12, 2-4).

Baseball Falls at Cuesta, 10-3March 04, 2023The Pirate baseball team traveled to San Luis Obispo on Saturday, falling at Cuesta 10-3 Saturday. Reiss Calvin had a pair of hits and a run scored while Haiden Letzing also recorded two hits in the game. Gage Allen had a base hit and a sacrifice fly and Bryce Elias hit an RBI triple and scored a run. Neal Brower, Harrison Cordeiro and Aiden Walker all pitched scoreless innings in relief of VC starter Jared Hughes.

Ventura Limited to Four Hits in Setback to MoorparkMarch 03, 2023The Pirate baseball team was limited to four hits on Friday in their 5-1 loss to Moorpark at Pirate Park. Reiss Calvin, Andrew Savage, Aaron McLeod and Gage Allen all delivered singles for VC (6-10, 2-2), but they could not string any together in the setback. Hunter Jones had a solid five innings on the mound, giving up three runs, none of them earned, limiting the Raiders to four hits. Wilson Spinks followed with three shutout frames, but Ventura could not muster the offense to pull out a win.

Six-Run Eighth Boosts Pirates to VictoryMarch 02, 2023The VC baseball team hung around long enough for its offense to come through. Trailing 5-3 to Cuesta headed to the bottom of the eighth, the Pirates plated six runs, punctuated by Reiss Calvin's two-run home run, to defeat the Cougars 9-5 Thursday at Pirate Park. Calvin had a double, triple and homer on the day, with three runs batted in, and Mason Reid had a pair of hits with an RBI and a run scored to lead the way. Cooper Smith pitched Ventura (6-9, 2-1) into the fifth inning and Ryan Sweeney threw three solid frames of relief to pick up the win.

Raiders' Big Inning Does In Ventura on the RoadFebruary 22, 2023The Pirate baseball team gave up one big inning Wednesday, yielding four runs to Moorpark in the bottom of the fourth, and that was enough to seal their fate in the 5-2 setback in the East County. Reiss Calvin was 2-3 with an RBI to lead the Pirate offense and Gage Allen hit a double and scored a run. Hunter Jones pitched 3.2 innings of relief to give the Pirates a chance, but VC (5-9, 1-1) was unable to come up with the clutch hit in the loss.
