2021 Ventura College Volleyball Team News

  • Pirate Student Athletes Strong in the Classroom
    August 19, 2022
    Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2021-22, achieving an overall 3.26 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a solid 3.19 overall GPA in the spring.  A total of 123 Pirates earned Dean's List honors in the fall of 2021 with a 3.5 GPA or better while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 51 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In the spring, 112 VC student athletes were featured on the Dean's List with 41 posting perfect GPA's.
  • Knowles Earns AVCA All-American Honors
    January 19, 2022
    It was a season to remember for the Pirate volleyball team in 2021. From their second Western State Conference title in three years to a playoff run to the Southern California Regional Finals, the first for VC since 2000. WSC Player of the Year Nevada Knowles earned another first for the Ventura program when she was named second-team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Knowles becomes the first AVCA All-American in program history.
  • Knowles Named WSC PoY, Bickers, Mulville, 1st Team All-WSC

    On the heels of a memorable season, VC volleyball standout Nevada Knowles has been named the Player of the Year for the Western State Conference North Division. Additionally, Darynne Bickers and Katey Mulville were both named 1st-team All-WSC and head coach Brad Lyans was named co-Coach of the Year in voting by conference coaches in November.
  • VC Volleyball Falls in 5-Set Heartbreaker
    November 27, 2021
    The Ventura College volleyball team was five points away from its first trip to the CCCAA State Elite Eight since 2000. It might as well have been 100. VC was leading the visiting College of the Canyons Cougars 20-18 in the third set, ahead in the match 2-0, when a wall went up between the Pirates and Elite status. CoC came back to win the set, and took the final two in a hearbreaking end to a wonderful season for Ventura.
  • VC Has 'Sweet" Sweep at Irvine Valley
    November 23, 2021
    The Ventura College volleyball team advanced to the state "Sweet 16" with a sweeping 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 playoff victory at No. 7 Irvine Valley College Tuesday. Alexis Baloyo had 15 kills for the No. 10-seeded Pirates while Nevada Knowles handed out 35 assists. Averi Carter and Savannah Marchese anchored the defensive effort with nine and eight digs, respectively, as Ventura (18-6) earned its first playoff victory since 2018.
  • Volleyball Earns SoCal's No. 10-seed for Playoffs
    November 18, 2021
    The Ventura College volleyball team has earned the No. 10-seed in the upcoming Southern California regional Playoffs. VC (17-6) will travel to No. 7 Irvine Valley (16-5) on Tuesday Nov. 23 for a 6:00 pm match. The Pirates shared the Western State Conference North Division championship in 2021, the program's second in the past three seasons. Irvine Valley, the state runner-up in 2019, tied for second place in the Orange Empire Conference.
  • Spikers Drop Regular Season Finale at Canyons
    November 16, 2021
    The VC volleyball team dropped its regular season finale Tuesday in a dramatic five-set match against College of the Canyons In Santa Clarita. VC held a 2-1 advantage before dropping the fourth and fifth sets for the 25-17, 20-25, 16-25, 26-24, 15-12 result.
  • Volleyball Claims Share of WSC Crown with Sweep
    November 10, 2021
    The Pirates' volleyball team claimed a share of its second Western State Conference North Division championship in the past three seasons with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-8 sweep over Los Angeles Mission College Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center. Darynne Bickers had eight kills and Nevada Knowles recorded six winners with 20 assists. Alexis Baloyo hit six kills with eight digs and four aces while Averi Carter also had six kills for Ventura (17-5, 8-2).
  • Ventura Beats Pierce, Climbs into First Place Tie

    The VC volleyball team defeated Los Angeles Pierce 25-8, 25-10, 23-25, 25-13 Friday in Woodland Hills behind 12 kills fro Victoria Whitney and 34 assists from Nevada Knowles. That victory, coupled with Moorpark's 5-set loss to Santa Barbara puts the Pirates, Raiders and Vaqueros in a virtual tie atop the Western State Conference North Division standings with one week remaining in the regular season.
  • Pirates Defeat Pirates in Key Non-Conference Match

    It was Pirates vs. Pirates Tuesday evening in the Athletic Event Center as the No. 15-ranked VC volleyball team hosted No. 20 Orange Coast in a key late-season non-conference match-up. Nevada Knowles had a double-double of 11 kills and 40 assists to go along with seven digs and a .464 hitting percentage to lead the way for Ventura in their 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23 triumph over OCC. Alexis Baloyo also had a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs for VC (15-5, 6-2).

  • Spikers' Resurgence Continues in Sweep of Santa Barbara

    In their biggest match of the season to-date, the No. 19-ranked VC volleyball team continued their resurgence with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-19 sweep over No. 11 Santa Barbara Friday at the Athletic Event Center. Katey Mulville had a spectactular evening with 16 kills and a .560 hitting percentage. She was set up for much of the night by Nevada Knowles who dished out all 32 assists for the Pirates (14-5, 6-2) in the victory. Savannah Marchese led the defense with 17 digs on the back line.
  • Volleyball Rebounds for Sweeping Victory at Cuesta
    October 27, 2021
    After a pair of losses a week ago, the Pirate volleyball team faced its longest road trip of the season Wednesday, traveling to San Luis Obispo to face the Cuesta Cougars. The No. 19-ranked Pirates responded in fine fashion, sweeping past the Cougars 25-14, 25-20, 25-17. Alexis Baloyo led VC (13-5, 5-2) with nine kills and eight digs while Nevada Knowles returned to her primary setter duties with 29 assists, five kills and four digs.
  • Spikers Fall in Four in 1st Place Showdown
    October 22, 2021
    Two of the three teams in a first place tie in the Western State Conference North Division met Friday night at a raucous Athletic Event Center with the Pirates' volleyball team coming up short 20-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-16 to visiting Moorpark. Nevada Knowles had 10 kills and 16 assists to lead the No. 14-ranked Pirates. Katey Mulville and Darynne Bickers each recorded eight winners while Alexis Baloyo had seven kills with 10 digs in the match.
  • Strong Effort by Pirate VB Falls Short at Bakersfield
    October 19, 2021
    The No. 14-ranked Ventura College volleyball team traveled to No. 6 Bakersfield looking for a signature win. Despite a strong effort, however, the Pirates fell short to the Renegades, falling in three sets, 25-18, 27-25, 25-17 Tuesday night. Darynne Bickers and Nevada Knowles each recorded eight kills in the match, and Knowles added 12 assists, but VC (12-4, 4-1) fell short in the non-conference contest rescheduled from Sept. 22.
  • Ventura Sweeps Past LA Mission
    October 15, 2021
    The Ventura College volleyball team continued rolling on Friday evening, sweeping past Los Angeles Mission College 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 in San Fernando. Alexis Baloyo and Nevada Knowles each had seven kills while Averi Carter and Katey Mulville each had six winners to lead the balanced attack. Amelie Zubia had 10 assists and four services aces for Ventura (12-3, 4-1).
  • Pirates Sweep Past LA Pierce in Three
    October 13, 2021
    The VC volleyball team was rolling on all cylinders Wednesday night, sweeping past visiting Los Angeles Pierce 25-9, 25-23, 25-11 at the Athletic Event Center. Nevada Knowles led the Pirates with 10 kills, eight assists, three digs and two blocks and Savannah Marchese led the defense with nine digs. Amelie Zubia recorded seven assists, five digs and a pair of services aces in the victory.
  • Ventura Volleyball Drops Close Match in Three
    October 06, 2021
    On the record it will go down as a 3-0 setback at Santa Barbara for the VC volleyball team. The reality is, however, that the No. 17-ranked Pirates gave the No. 7-ranked Vaqueros all they wanted and more Wednesday night at the Sports Pavilion in Santa Barbara. Nevada Knowles had another solid overall outing with seven kills, 23 assists and 10 digs and Alexis Baloyo had eight kills in VC's 6-24, 25-21, 25-21 loss at SBCC.
  • VC Volleyball Outlasts Cuesta in Four
    October 01, 2021
    Averi Carter had a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs Friday night as the Ventura College volleyball team outlasted visiting Cuesta in four sets, 25-19, 25-21, 26-28, 25-14 before a nice crowd at the Athletic Event Center. Nevada Knowles was her usual multi-dimensional-self with 42 assists, six kills, seven digs, three blocks and three services aces in the triumph while Alexis Baloyo had 11 kills and nine digs for Ventura (10-2, 2-0).
  • Pirate Volleyball Jumps Moorpark in WSC Opener
    September 29, 2021
    After a five-set loss to rival Moorpark on the opening weekend, the Ventura College volleyball team had a score to settle Wednesday. The Pirates took care of business at Raider Pavilion with a 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18, four-set victory over the Raiders in the Western State Conference opener for both teams. Nevada Knowles had 39 assists, nine kills, nine digs and a pair of block assists and Darynne Bickers was key at the net with 16 kills to go along with four digs and two block assists in the VC triumph.
  • Balanced Attack Sweeps Spikers Past Santa Monica
    September 24, 2021
    Another balanced attack led the Pirate volleyball team in a three-set sweep over Santa Monica College Friday at the Athletic Event Center 25-11, 25-17, 25-23. Averi Carter had eight kills on the night for VC (8-2) while Alexis baloyo and Katey Mulville each hit seven winners. Darynne Bickers had six kills for Ventura, who is ranked No. 20 in the latest CCCWVCA state rankings. Nevada Knowles had 31 assists in the match while Amaris Garcia anchored the defense with 16 digs.
  • Balanced Pirate Attack Overwhelms Canyons
    September 17, 2021
    For the first 10 points of Friday's women's volleyball match between Ventura and Canyons at the Athletic Event Center, it looked as if it would be a barn-burner between the state's Nos. 24 and 20-ranked teams, respectively. Then, however, Averi Carter served eight straight winners for VC (7-2) and the Pirates were on their way to a 3-0 sweep of the Cougars, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21. Nevada Knowles once again was Ventura's everything player with eight kills, 26 assists and six digs.
  • Spikers Sweep Roadrunners For Third Straight 'W'
    September 15, 2021
    After a long bus ride to Palm Desert, the VC volleyball team looked as if they were playing next door in their 25-16, 25-15, 25-16 sweep over College of the Desert Wednesday. Nevada Knowles had eight kills, 20 assists and five services aces while Darynne Bickers recorded seven winners at the net. Amaris Garcia had 14 digs defensively for VC (6-2), who is ranked No. 23 in the latest state poll.
  • Volleyball Sweeps Two Matches in Pirate Classic Tri
    September 10, 2021
    Playing at home for the first time in nearly two years, the Pirate volleyball team made the most of their opportunity with a pair of 3-0 sweeps in the Pirate Classic Tri at the Athletic Event Center Friday. VC (5-2) dispatched of Imperial Valley 25-16, 25-19, 25-10 in the opener before defeating Citrus 25-14, 25-23, 25-14 in the nightcap. Nevada Knowles handed out 73 assists in the two contests while Katey Mulville, Alexis Bayolo and Darynne Bickers recorded 19, 18 and 17 kills, respectively, in the two victories.
  • Pirate Athletics Ready to Welcome Fans Back to Campus
    September 01, 2021
    For the first time in 542 days, Ventura College Athletics is poised to welcome fans back on campus. On Thursday the Pirate soccer team hosts Golden West College at 8:00 pm at the VC Sportsplex, concluding three games in the 2021 new Balance Community College Showcase. Santa Barbara and Orange Coast will open the showcase at 1:00 pm, followed at 6:00 pm by Hartnell and Cypress. VC plays the marquee game of day one of the three-day event.
  • Volleyball Drops Close Match at Pasadena
    September 01, 2021
    After a slow start in the opening set, the Ventura College volleyball team outscored host Pasadena 70-68 over the final three sets, but unfortunately dropped two of the three in their 25-13, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22 loss against the Lancers Wednesday at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. Nevada Knowles had another all-around solid game with a triple-double of 18 kills, 14 assists and 14 digs to lead the Pirates (3-2).
  • Spikers Split Final Day Of LA Mission Classic
    August 28, 2021
    The VC volleyball team won their semifinal match Saturday in the LA Mission Kickoff Classic before falling in a five-set heartbreaker in the finals of the two-day tournament. The Pirates swept Folsom Lake College 25-8, 25-17, 25-21 before going the distance in the finals with rival Moorpark, falling 10-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-9. Alexis Baloyo led the attack for Ventura (3-1) with 13 kills, 32 digs and five services aces on the day while Faith Carillo handed out 41 assists with 14 digs and five aces.
  • Pirate Volleyball Opens 2021 With Two Wins
    August 27, 2021
    After a 21-month lay-off due to COVID restrictions and a cancelled 2020 season, the Ventura College volleyball team opened the 2021 campaign with a pair of wins in the LA Mission Kickoff Classic Friday in Sylmar. VC (2-0) defeated Monterey Peninsula 25-14, 25-20, 25-22 in the first match of the day before sweeping Imperial Valley 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 in the tournament quarterfinals. Darynne Bickers and Averi Carter each had 14 kills on the day while Faith Carillo handed out 37 assists in the two contests. Amaris Garcia led the defense with 28 digs.
  • VC's Fall Sports Returns to Competition
    August 26, 2021
    Ventura College's fall sports return to competition on Friday August 27. When the Pirate volleyball team takes the court against Monterey Peninsula at 12:30 pm in the LA Mission Kickoff Classic it will mark the Pirates' first official fall sports contest in 21 months. The VC women's soccer team opens its 2021 season on Sunday Aug. 29 at Mt. San Antonio College beginning a full week of games in Pirate Athletics' return.
