The Ventura College men and women's track teams traveled to Cuesta College for the annual WSC Coastal clash, featuring host Cuesta, and Ventura, West LA, Allan Hancock, Moorpark, Santa Barbara. Just as they did February 19th when they hosted the first of the two scoring meets, the Pirates came out on top. The women scored 186 points to outdistance West LA (124), Cuesta (68), Moorpark (60), Allan Hancock (47), and Santa Barbara (30).
Just as she had in the first six-way meet, Alisha Greenlaw was the top point scorer, having a hand in 46 points. Greenlaw produced wins in the 100 meters, 100 meter hurdles, 4x100 meter relay, second in the 200 and fourth place finishes in the long and triple jump. Not to be outdone, Danielle Colvin and Alyssa Carrillo produced outstanding efforts to go along with Greenlaw. Colvin won the long jump on her last attempt, ran on the winning relay, took second in the 400 meters and triple jump to account for 37 points. Carrillo placed second in the shot put, discus, hammer and javelin throw events for 32 points. Between this Pirate trio they accounted for 115 (62%) of the team's 186 points. Tiara Litonjua continued her fine season in the 400 meter hurdles as she lead a top two finish with Brittany Cox. Maria Villalobos placed third in both the 1500 and 3k distance events.
The men were not as lucky with host Cuesta College producing just as dominant a performance as the Pirate women scoring 174 points. West LA again held the second spot (131), and was followed in the scoring by Moorpark (83), Santa Barbara (69), Ventura (57) and Allan Hancock (34). The men's competition produced Pirate highlights as Tristan Griffith pulled off the sprint double winning the 100 and 200 meter events while producing a lifetime best and top 10 all-time mark in the 200. Griffith later joined the team of Aaron Guidry, Paul Eide, and Ronald Washington to record a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay.
"The scoring meets always bring out the best in this team," commented head track & field coach Tony Veney. "We had several outstanding performances from top to bottom and that is what will make a difference April 22 and 29 for the WSC Championships taking place later this month." The Pirates travel to the city of Glendale, April 9 for the inaugural Vaquero Invitation at Glendale College. Field events start at 11:00 am and the first running event will take place at 12:00 pm.
