The Ventura College Men and Women's track teams traveled to Occidental College for their annual Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic. The early events were able to avoid the threat of rain held giving Alisha Greenlaw a chance to shine. Placing second in the 100m hurdles behind a guest competitor from Japan, Greelaw's time of 14.83 is second only to her own school record of 14.67. The 14.83 ranks her second in the conference, fourth in SoCal and seventh in the state. Greenlaw also placed third in the long jump with a PR effort of 17'0". Unfortunately, the skies turned dark and began a three hour deluge that cut the meet short.
Despite the weather the men's 'B' 4x100 was able to win their heat, a team consisting of Montrease Williams, O'Cean Brown, Leo Ramirez, and Christopher Williams. In addition, Aiyana Brown and Fabre Brooks won their women's 100 meters heats. Aizabelle Sarmiento took second in her heat running the fastest time of the day for the Pirates. Tristan Griffith also took a positive step toward the post season by placing fourth in the men's 400 meters. Griffith's time was his second fastest ever and ranked him first in the WSC, third in SoCal, and sixth in the state.
"We had some good overall marks before the rains came" commented head coach Tony Veney. "I was especially pleased with Griffith's run since the rain altered his performance, yet he competed well."
The Pirates hit the road again on Friday Mar. 18 for the Antelope Valley Spring Invitational. Field events start at 11:00 am with the first running events scheduled for 12:15 pm.
