Playing their home finale on the final day of the regular season, the Pirates' men's water polo team split a pair of matches Friday at the Ventura Aquatic Center. VC (6-21, 1-3) defeated Mt. San Antonio 17-14 in the opener before falling to Fullerton 12-6 in the nightcap.
Ventura 17, Mt. San Antonio 14
The Pirates won their second match in a row behind six goals from Dominic Tassano. Keaton Hess scored five goals while Daniel Amorim netted four scores. Trevor Edwards and Alejandro Astudillo also put the ball in the cage for VC. J'son Ruiz turned back six Mt. SAC shots in the victory.
Ventura 6, Fullerton 12
Ventura scored the first three goals of the third quarter to make the score 7-6 in favor of the Hornets before Fullerton ended the game with five unanswered goals. Amorim and Edwards each scored a pair of goals and Mitchell Ongstad and Tassano each scored once. Ruiz had five saves.
The Pirates next head to the Western State Conference Tournament at Citrus College. The No. 4 seed, VC will battle No. 5 Santa Monica at 10:00 am on Friday Nov. 7. The winner of that match will take on No. 1 Los Angeles Valley at 2:15 pm Friday. The WSC championship is Saturday Nov. 8 at 2:30 pm.
