The Ventura College men's water polo team continued the good fight Friday despite falling in their first two matches of the Riverside Tournament. VC lost to Long Beach 17-6 in the opener before falling 15-8 to Grossmont in the second match of the day.
Ventura 6, Long Beach 17
Long Beach jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead in the first quarter using a strong counter attack. The Pirates settled down from that point, but could not overcome the huge deficit.
Daniel Amorim had three goals and Trevor Edwards scored a pair. Dominic Tassano also netted a score while J'son Ruiz had eight saves in goal.
Ventura 8, Grossmont 15
Ventura was solid in the first period, remaining within 2-1, and stayed within striking distance through three quarters. The Pirates just could not close the gap against the Griffins, however, and Grossmont ran away in the final stanza.
Amorim led VC once again with three goals and Tassano netted three, as well. Michael Barbosa scored twice and Ruiz recorded 12 saves.
The Pirates will close out the Riverside Tournament Saturday Oct. 11 with matches against Palomar at 9:10 am and against the host Riverside Tigers at 1:50 pm.
