Ventura College men's tennis team traveled to the inland empire and took on Riverside College and left with a 6-3 victory over the Tigers. Corey Karen, Guenter Newman and Michael Burr each brought home wins to the Pirates on the singles and doubles side of the match. Ventura won two of three doubles match ups and claimed four of six singles match ups.
The Pirates (1-0) faced off with RCC in day one of a two day road trip to open their 2016 season. Karen teamed up with Hironori Koyanagi to claim their doubles match up by a score of 8-1. Burr was paired with Newman for a 8-4 victory as part of the Pirates taking the doubles side of the match.
Karen was also set to play in singles play for the Pirates and was able to claim straight sets victory in his match up 6-2 and 6-2. Burr played as a singles player for Ventura and picked up three set victory over RCC with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win. Newman claimed his singles match up in three sets as well dropping set one 2-6, but rallied to win the final two sets for a victory. VC as a team claimed four of the six singles matches.
Ventura will return to the court on Friday Feb. 5 for a 12:00 pm match up with Grossmont College at Grossmont. Then they will open Western State Conference North play on Thursday Feb. 18 with a road trip to Santa Barbara to take on Santa Barbara City College at 2:00 pm.
