Pirate Student Athletes Strong in the ClassroomAugust 19, 2022Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in 2021-22, achieving an overall 3.26 grade point average in the fall and following that up with a solid 3.19 overall GPA in the spring. A total of 123 Pirates earned Dean's List honors in the fall of 2021 with a 3.5 GPA or better while taking in 12 or more units of study, with 51 student athletes recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. In the spring, 112 VC student athletes were featured on the Dean's List with 41 posting perfect GPA's.

Pirate Baseball Earns National Recognition for Academic ExcellenceAugust 03, 2022The American Baseball Coaches Association is proud to recognize the nearly 700 member college and high school programs from across the country that have been awarded the 2021-22 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, which is presented by Sports Attack. VC achieved an overall grade point average of 3.30 for the entire 2021-22 academic year to earn recognition from the ABCA.

Nine Pirates Honored as All-WSCJune 02, 2022The VC baseball team had nine players honored on the All-Western State Conference team in voting by the conference coaches last month. Leading the way were four first-team selections including infielder Reiss Calvin, first baseman John Oleson and outfielders JR Godinez and Nick Schnopp. Ventura finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 22-18, 15-9 in WSC North Division play.

Baseball Upends Moorpark in Regular Season FinaleApril 30, 2022The Pirate baseball team ended the regular season on a high note Saturday with an 11-1 victory over Moorpark at Pirate Park. Cooper Smith had an outstanding start on the mound, scattering three hits over six complete innings facing one batter over the minimum while keeping the Raiders scoreless. Reiss Calvin was 4-5 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the 12-hit Pirate attack.

Ventura Drops Close Decision at PierceApril 29, 2022The Pirate baseball team's quest for the post season took a shot Friday in a 6-5 setback against Los Angeles Pierce Friday in a game played at LA Valley. VC (21-18, 14-9) scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and had the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on first when the Brahmas retired the side. Nick Schnopp had two hits and a run batted in in the final frame, and John Oleson also had a pair of hits with two RBI in the game for Ventura.

Pirates Hold Off Bulldogs in Home VictoryApril 28, 2022The visiting Allan Hancock College scored the first five and the final four runs of the game. It was the 11 runs in the middle scored by the VC baseball team that made the difference, however, as the Pirates held off the Bulldogs 11-9 at Pirate Park on Thursday. Ventura's top three batters JR Godinez, Reiss Calvin and John Oleson all recorded two runs batted in to lead the way while Ramon Torres hit a home run and scored twice. Jared Hughes pitched six innings of relief to pick up the win on the mound.

Baseball Falls at Santa Barbara, 11-5April 23, 2022The Pirate baseball team's quest for the post-season took a hit on Saturday with an 11-5 loss at Santa Barbara. In a battle for second place in the Western State Conference North Division, the Vaqueros took a 7-0 lead before Ventura got on the board with a five-run seventh. Julien Monks had an run batted in and Reiss Calvin knocked in two, but VC could not complete the comeback.

Ventura Pulls Away from Oxnard at Pirate ParkApril 21, 2022The Pirate baseball team pulled away from visiting Oxnard throughout the day in their 12-4 victory Thursday afternoon at Pirate Park. Hunter Jones gave up one run over four innings of relief work to pick up the win on the mound as Nick Schnopp and Ramon Torres each hit home runs to pace the Ventura offense.

VC Can't Complete Comeback at CuestaApril 19, 2022The Pirate baseball team had its comeback bid fall short Tuesday in their 7-5 setback at Cuesta, Ventura (19-16, 12-7) trailed 7-3 before scoring a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but they could get no closer to the conference-leading Cougars. KJ Moo-Young had a pair of hits and a walk with two runs scored to lead the effort while Andrew Savage and Reiss Calvin each had a pair of runs batted in.

One Inning Does Pirates in at Mt. SACApril 16, 2022The Pirate baseball team had an excellent game, except for one inning. Leading 7-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Pirates allowed 16 batters to come to the plate scoring 11 runs as VC dropped the 11-7 decision under the lights at Mt. San Antonio. Andrew Savage had a pair of hits with two runs batted in and a run scored and Casey Turturici recorded two hits, including a triple, with one RBI and one run scored to lead the Pirates (19-15, 12-6).

Pirates Make it 10 out of 11 at LA HarborApril 14, 2022The Pirate baseball team won its 10th game in 11 outings on Thursday with a 12-9 victory at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington. Ramon Torres was 3-5 with a double, two runs scored and a run batted in, and Nick Schnopp and Julien Monks each hit home runs to propel VC (19-14, 12-6). Andrew Savage and KJ Moo-Young also belted out three hits each while Dawson Radik picked up the win on the mound and Ryan Sweeney earned the save.

Ventura Baseball Tops Three Touchdowns in WinApril 12, 2022With a score more indicative of a football game, the Ventura College baseball team scored a pair of touchdowns with three field goals to defeat West Los Angeles 23-10 Tuesday afternoon in Culver City. KJ Moo-Young had four hits, including a double, with four runs scored and four runs batted in to lead VC's 19-hit attack against the Wildcats. Jake Read picked up the win on the mound despite yielding seven runs over five innings of work with six strikeouts.

VC Baseball Falls to Late Moorpark RallyApril 09, 2022The Ventura College baseball team was on its way to a ninth straight win on Saturday before Moorpark scored five runs n the bottom of the eighth. The Pirates dropped the 8-7 decision to the Raiders, their first setback in four weeks. JR Godinez had three hits, scored three runs and knocked in another to lead the offense for VC (17-14, 12-6) while Julien Monks scored a pair of runs. Cooper Smith pitched into the seventh inning giving up three runs, two earned, and did not factor in the decision.

Pirates Come Back from Six Down for VictoryApril 07, 2022The Pirate baseball team trailed visiting Moorpark 6-0 in the middle of the third inning before rallying for a 14-9 victory over the Raiders Thursday. John Oleson paced the VC offense with five of the team's 19 hits with four runs batted in and a run scored while Casey Turturici had four hits, two of them doubles, with an RBI and a run scored. JR Godinez had three hits and scored four times and Julien Monks also recorded three hits, including a double, with three runs scored.

Early Rally Holds Up for Ventura at MoorparkApril 05, 2022The Pirate baseball team scored four runs in the top of the first, and three more in the fourth inning to win their seventh straight game, 7-4 at Moorpark on Tuesday. Jake Read threw into the eighth inning with an outstanding start on the mound, giving up four runs, two earned, and striking out a pair to pick up the win. Casey Turturici had a pair of hits, knocked in two runs and scored two more and JR Godinez recorded two hits with a run scored in the victory for the VC (16-13, 11-5).

Pirate Baseball Wins Sixth Straight GameApril 02, 2022The VC baseball team won its sixth straight game Saturday, defeating Los Angeles Pierce 8-2 at Pirate Park. Starting pitcher Cooper Smith threw five scoreless innings giving up three hits with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Garrick Levesque knocked in two runs and scored two more while Nick Schnopp had a pair of hits, including a double, with two runs scored. VC (15-13, 10-5) now sits in a second-place tie in the Western State Conference North Division standings.

Another Late-Inning Rally Leads to Pirate WinMarch 31, 2022The VC baseball team was the "visitor" on Thursday at Pirate Park, as LA Pierce "hosted" the game two of the three-game set, but the results were familiar for Ventura. The Pirates rallied for seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings to post a come-from-behind 7-5 win over the Brahmas, VC's fifth straight triumph and their ninth win in the past 11 games. Casey Turturici provided a game-winning three-run home run in the top of the eighth to set the final margin.

VC Holds Off Pierce for 4th Straight WSC WinMarch 29, 2022The Pirate baseball team held leads of 6-1 and 10-5 against Los Angeles Pierce Tuesday at Pirate Park before scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth for an 11-10 victory over the Brahmas. JR Godinez went 3-5 with a triple, three runs batted in and two runs scored and Andrew Savage had a pair of hits while scoring once and knocking in two. Nick Schnopp contributed two hits and three RBI as VC (13-13, 8-5) won with a run in their final at-bat for the third time during their four-game winning streak.

Pirates Earn Series Sweep Over Bulldogs with Wild WinMarch 26, 2022In the last two games, the Pirates baseball team has defeated Hancock with its last at-bat. Saturday in Santa Maria, VC built a big lead then held late in their 16-13 win over the Bulldogs to earn the series sweep. The Pirates led 16-5 at the seventh inning stretch before allowing eight Hancock runs over the final three frames to make things interesting. Reiss Calvin had four hits, including a double, with four runs scored and JR Godinez had two singles and a double with two runs scored and three runs batted in to lead the attack for Ventura (12-13, 7-5).

Ventura Walks Off Hancock in 10 After 4-Run 9thMarch 24, 2022For the second straight game, the VC baseball team used late-game heroics to get the best of the Allan Hancock Bulldogs. The Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game before Julien Monks singled to score Nick Schnopp with the walk-off game-winner. Robby Keister pitched a perfect 10th with a pair of strikeouts to earn the win on the mound for Ventura (11-13, 6-5).

5-Run Ninth Leads to Pirate Win at HancockMarch 22, 2022The Pirate baseball team score five runs in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday leading to an 8-5 victory over Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. Nick Schnopp had a two-RBI double and JR Godinez hit a two-RBI single in VC's final at-bat to help secure the victory. Robby Keister pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to pick up the win for Ventura (10-13, 5-5).

Casey Turturici homered and Ramon Torres drove in two runs to lead the effort for Ventura while JR Godinez, John Oleson and Julien Monks all recorded a pair of hits. Cooper Smith pitched seven strong innings in the start, giving up one earned run while striking out six.

Pirate Win Streak Ends at Santa BarbaraMarch 10, 2022The VC baseball team had its four-game winning streak halted in a 7-2 decision at Santa Barbara Thursday afternoon. Reiss Calvin had a pair of hits, including a double, with a run scored and a run batted in and Ramon Torres recorded an RBI single in the game for the Pirates (9-12, 4-4). Nick Schnopp scored the other run for Ventura in the middle game of the three-game set with the Vaqueros.

JR Godinez and KJ Moo-Young scored two runs each as VC (9-11, 4-3) used a six-run fifth inning to put the game away. Jake Read threw six complete innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out five to pick up the win on the mound.

Pirates Score Double Figures For Sweep of CondorsMarch 05, 2022The Pirate baseball team scored in double-figures for the third consecutive game Saturday to defeat Oxnard 12-6 to complete the three-game sweep of the Condors. Garrick Levesque and JR Godinez each knocked in three runs and scored another while Ramon Torres and Julien Monks each recorded two RBI in the triumph. Cooper Smith pitched into the sixth inning, yielding four runs on eight hits to pick up the victory on the mound.

Calvin Hits For The Cycle to Lead Pirates to WinMarch 03, 2022VC second baseman Reiss Calvin has had a solid start to his career for the Pirates. That start was accentuated Thursday when he hit for the cycle with six runs batted in leading Ventura to an 11-5 victory over Oxnard at Pirate Park. Calvin hit a two-run home run in the first, a two-RBI double in the fifth, a single in the seventh, and a two-RBI triple in the eighth for the rare baseball feat. Julien Mons had three hits, including a double, with two RBI in a supporting role for Ventura (7-11, 2-3).

Pirate Baseball Bounces Back at OxnardMarch 01, 2022The VC baseball team bounced back with a 10-4 victory at Oxnard College Tuesday afternoon in the first game of a three-game series. Jake Read started on the hill and pitched four innings with five strikeouts and the VC bullpen threw five scoreless innings to preserve the win. Reiss Calvin and John Oleson led the 21-hit attack with four hits each and JR Godinez and Nick Schopp each produced three hits for the Pirates (6-11, 1-3).

Ventura Drops Final Game of Series Against CuestaFebruary 26, 2022The Pirate baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game set against Cuesta 11-1 Saturday at Pirate Park. Cooper Smith took the hard-luck loss on the mound, pitching five innings and giving up two runs, one earned with a pair of strikeouts. VC trailed 2-1 when Smith left the game. Andrew Savage had two hits and a run batted in while Casey Turturici had a single, a walk and a run scored.

Ventura Baseball Falls at CuestaFebruary 24, 2022The VC baseball team could not hold onto its early 3-2 lead, falling at Cuesta 14-5 Thursday afternoon. Andrew Savage, John Oleson and Ramon Torres all had a pair of hits on the day, and each had a double with a run scored. JR Godinez also ran out a pair of base hits for Ventura in the game. Sebastian Garcia, Anthony Betancourt and Jonah Schaller all had scoreless innings on the mound in relief.

Pirate Baseball Drops WSC OpenerFebruary 22, 2022The VC baseball team dropped its Western State Conference opener Tuesday 12-6 against Cuesta Collega at Pirate Park. Ventura held a 2-0 lead after three innings, but a four-run fourth by the Cougars turned the tables. John Oleson was 2-4 for the Pirates with a home run and three runs batted in and Casey Turturici also went yard with a pair of RBI. Reiss Calvin scored two runs in the game.
