Mahoney-Bruer Named Head Baseball CoachSeptember 01, 2020Pirate head baseball coach Cole Mahoney-Bruer has had the "Interim" tag removed from his title. Mahoney-Bruer, who will enter his sixth season in the VC dugout in the spring, served as the interim head coach during last spring's covid-shortened campaign after four years as an assistant. He has played a role in helping 55 Pirate baseball players transfer to four-year schools, including 15 to NCAA Division I, during his time with the orange and black. He was the lead assistant for VC's 2019 Western State Conference championship team.

Pirate Athletics Lists 83 4-Year Transfers for 2019-20August 31, 2020The Ventura College Athletic Department is pleased to report that they list 83 student athletes from 2019-20 who are slated to transfer to four-year institutions in the fall, as of August 31. Of those transfers, 60 plan on continuing their athletic careers at their new school, most of them with an athletic scholarship. The transferring student athletes will attend 58 different schools in 26 states around the country.

VC Baseball Academics Honored by State Coaches AssociationMay 13, 2020Nine players from Ventura College's 2019 Western State Conference championship team were honored earlier this spring by the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association as Academic All-State honorees. A total of 202 players from the 2019 season were honored by the coaches association for achieving at least a 3.5 grade point average during the last academic year.

VC Athletics Mourns Passing of Hall of Famer Dennis Downey '73May 01, 2020Dennis Downey, a 1973 Ventura College alumnus and a member of the VC Athletics Hall of Fame, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 20, 2020. A graduate of Ventura High School, he was a standout for the Pirates in football and baseball before transferring to Oregon State.

2020 VC Baseball ReviewApril 23, 2020The 2020 Pirate baseball season may have been cut short by the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent nation-wide shutdown, but it was not short of drama that is unique to JC baseball. Late-inning heroics, wide run swings, and solid individual performances highlighted the Pirates' 2020 baseball season.

CCCAA Cancels Spring Seasons, Restores EligibilityMarch 20, 2020The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Board of Directors voted unanimously on Thursday that the remainder of the 2020 spring sports season will be canceled, the spring season of competition for approximately 9,500 student-athletes will be restored and face-to-face recruiting and recruiting-related travel is being prohibited immediately but will be re-evaluated next month. Ventura College is a participant in the CCCAA, and the college has moved to all online instruction for the remainder of the spring semester.

VC Athletics Postpones Spring Sports IndefinitelyMarch 13, 2020In accordance with a directive from the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), Ventura College has indefinitely postponed all spring sports, including nontradtional seasons, due to concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak. The move was voted upon by the CCCAA Board of Directors on Thursday afternoon.

VC Loses Lead Late in 2-1 SetbackMarch 09, 2020The Pirate baseball team scored a run in the bottom of the first inning Monday against Rio Hondo and made it stand up for eight more innings, giving up a two-run ninth to the Roadrunners in their 2-1 setback at Pirate Park. Gabe Baldovino singled to lead off the game and came around to score two batters later, and the Pirate pitching of Jacob Martinez, Omar Magana, Travis Nelson and Vincent Fashano held Rio Hondo scoreless beofe their rally in the final at bat.

Pirate Baseball Falls at Santa BarbaraMarch 07, 2020The VC baseball team dropped the rubber game of a three-game set against Santa Barbara 8-3 Saturday afternoon at Pershing Park. VC gave up a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and were playing catch-up the rest of the day against the Vaqueros. Jacob Harris had three hits on the day for Ventura (7-12, 2-7), including a double and a triple, and Jacob Martinez belted out a single and a double with a run scored and one run batted in.

Campbell's Solid Start Survives SBCC Comeback BidMarch 05, 2020Pirate starting pitcher Blake Campbell threw 6.2 scoreless innings on Thursday as VC built a 6-0 lead over Santa Barbara before a Vaquero rally in the ninth inning fell short in Ventura's 6-5 victory at Pirate Park. The sophomore hurler allowed just three hits and struck out three in picking up the win. Jacob Martinez had two hits with two runs batted while scoring a run and Adrian Sandoval had a two-RBI double to lead Ventura (7-11, 2-6) at the plate.

VC Drops 6-3 Decision at Santa BarbaraMarch 03, 2020The Pirate baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision at Santa Barbara City College Tuesday afternoon. The Vaqueros did most of their damage in a five-run third inning while Ventura was limited to five hits on the day, including a triple by Jacob Harris. Omar Gastelum and Alejandro Soto each batted in a run for VC (6-11, 1-6).

Ventura Walks Off Oxnard to Save Proffitt's GemFebruary 29, 2020The Pirate baseball team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday afternoon to walk off visiting Oxnard 3-2 at Pirate Park. The victory rewarded another stellar performance from starting pitcher Noah Proffitt, who picked up the complete game win allowing one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts. Travis Vaala had a pair of hits, including a double, with one run batted in and one run scored and Riley Langerman recorded three hits on the day for VC (6-10, 1-5).

Baseball Falls 1-0 in Extra InningsFebruary 27, 2020The Ventura College baseball team can't seem to catch a break. One game after giving up 10 runs, six in the first inning, the Pirate pitching from Blake Campbell and Jacob Martinez was superb through nine innings of shutout baseball, only to be undone by a lack of VC offense. Ventura (5-10, 0-5) managed just five hits in the game, falling at Oxnard College 1-0 in 10 innings Thursday.

Pirates Nearly Complete Comeback Against OxnardFebruary 25, 2020The Pirate baseball team spotted visiting Oxnard six runs in the first inning, then nearly completed the comeback in their 10-9 loss to the Condors Tuesday at Pirate Park. VC (5-9, 0-4) had the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, trailing by one run, but could not get the clutch hit to complete the recovery. Hunter Klingelhoffer had three hits, including a double, with two runs scored for Ventura. Elijah Maris recorded a pair of hits, one run scored and three runs batted in.

Proffitt Throws Gem in Hard-Luck Loss at CuestaFebruary 22, 2020Ventura College starting pitcher Noah Proffitt pitched into the seventh inning, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs, one earned while striking out six Saturday afternoon at Cuesta College in an Luis Obispo. Unfortunately, the Pirate offense could not get anything going as VC took the hard-luck 2-1 loss to the Cougars. Hunter Klingelhoffer had a ninth-inning home run to spoil the shutout.

VC Falls in Another Wild GameFebruary 20, 2020The Pirate baseball team battled back from an early 7-0 deficit, only to fall to visiting Cuesta 15-7 Thursday afternoon at Pirate Park. Gab e Baldovino had a pair of hits wit htwo runs batted in and a run scored for the Pirates (5-7, 0-2) an Hunter Klingelhoffer scored twice with a hit and a walk. Ventura used sveen pitchers in the game with Anthony Betancourt and Jacob Martinez throwing scoreless frames.

Ventura Drops Conference Opener at CuestaFebruary 18, 2020The Pirate baseball team traveled to San Luis Obispo on Tuesday, falling to Cuesta 8-3 in their Western State Conference North Division opener. Omar Gastelum had three hits, including a double, and one run batted in while Tonny Gibbons-Matsuyama doubled and scored a run. Hunter Klingelhoffer and Alejandro Soto each singled and scored a run and Anthony Chavez had an RBI single for Ventura (5-6, 0-1).

Baseball Wins Wild Game Against CanyonsFebruary 15, 2020One would think that Ventura's 10-0 lead over visiting College of the Canyons after the second inning would have been a safe one. However, anything is possible in JC baseball, and it happened on Saturday afternoon at Pirate Park. CoC came back with an 11-run third inning, and led 15-11 in the middle of the fifth before VC came back to post a 20-17 victory over the Cougars. Gabe Baldovino had two home runs in his four-hit day with four runs batted in and three runs scored to lead the onslaught for Ventura (5-5).

Pirates Fall to West LA's Late-Inning RallyFebruary 13, 2020The Pirate baseball team held a 4-3 lead with six outs remaining, but fell victim to a pair of late-inning rallies by the Wildcats in VC's 7-6 defeat at West Los Angeles College in Culver City on Thursday. Ventura (4-5) answered two West LA runs in the eighth with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, only to see the Wildcats walk off with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Tommy Gibbons-Matsuyama was 3-3 on the day with a double and a run scored while Omar Gastelum had two hits, including a triple, with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Pirate Bats Silent in Loss to CitrusFebruary 11, 2020The Pirate baseball team had its bats fall silent on Tuesday, falling at Citrus College 9-2 to split a two-game set with the Owls. VC managed just three hits in the game, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Tommy Gibbons-Matsuyama had a double and scored a run while Omar Gastelum and Mitchell Mashiko each reached base with singles. Travis Nelson pitched six complete innings in taking the setback for VC (4-4).

7th Inning Rally Propels VC to VictoryFebruary 08, 2020The Ventura college baseball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, breaking open a 1-1 tie leaading to a 4-3 victory over Citrus Saturday afternoon at Pirate Park. Blake Campbell allowed just one run over five innings of work as the starter and Noah Bullard picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief. Gabe Baldovino had four hits on the day, including a triple and a double, and scored the go-ahead run in the late rally. Omar Gastelum was 2-3 with a double, one run scored and one run batted in. Riley Langerman scored twice in the game.

Pirate Baseball Drops Home Contest With FullertonFebruary 06, 2020The Pirate baseball team let a close win get away, dropping a 10-6 decision to visiting Fullerton College Thursday afternoon at Pirate Park. VC led 6-5 heading to the top of the ninth before yielding five runs, including a grand slam home run, in the frame. Elijah Maris was 4-5 on the day for VC (3-3) with two runs scored and a run batted in while Gabe Baldovino had a pair of hits and two RBI. Noah Proffitt gave up fove runs, three earned, through six innings of work and was in line for the win before the late collapse.

Baseball Drops Decision at LA MissionFebruary 04, 2020The Pirate baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision Tuesday afternoon against Los Angeles Mission College in San Fernando. Ventura (3-2) was limited to five hits on the day, all singles, and Tommy Gibbons-Matsuyama scored twice to lead the way. Tyler Kennedy pitched four complete innings in the start and Blake Campbell had 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Pirates Fall in Extra Innings to LA MissionFebruary 01, 2020The VC baseball team scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings Saturday to force extra's, but eventually fell 8-6 in 10 to visiting Los Angeles Mission College. Jacob Harris and Hunter Klingelhoffer both homered for Ventura (3-1) but it was not enough to send the Pirates to their fourth straight victory to open the season. Riley Langerman had three hits, including a double, and Omar Gastelum had two hits and a run batted in.

Pirate Baseball Holds off Santa Ana in Home OpenerJanuary 28, 2020The Pirate baseball team score three runs in each of the first two innings Tuesday afternoon on a perfect day at Pirate Park, and held off a late charge from Santa Ana in their 8-6 home-opening victory. Riley Langerman had a pair of hits, including a double, with three runs batted in and a run scored while Gabe Baldovino, Omar Gastelum, and Elijah Maris also recorded two hits each. Noah Profitt picked up the win scattering eight hits over five innings, giving up two runs while striking out three for Ventura (3-0).

Kennedy's Strong Debut Leads Pirates Past DesertJanuary 25, 2020Making his Pirate debut, freshman pitcher Tyler Kennedy threw six strong innings, striking out four and allowing just one run in Ventura's 6-1 win over College of the Desert in Palm Desert. Hunter Klingelhoffer was 3-5 on the day with a double and Gabe Baldovino was 1-3 with a home run along with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Tommy Gibbons-Matsuyama was 2-5 for VC (2-0) with a double and a stolen base.

Baseball Opens Season With Dramatic Come-From Behind WinJanuary 24, 2020It takes 27 outs to complete a baseball game. Fortunately, the Pirates only used 26 before rallying for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to post an 8-5 come-from-behind season-opening victory at Mt. San Jacinto Friday. Hunter Klingelhoffer had a pair of hits with a run batted in, scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Mitchell Mashiko was 4-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored while Adrian Sandoval and Elijah Maris each scored twice. JuanCarlos Rodarte picked up the win in relief and Arman Muradian pitched the bottom of the ninth for the save.
