Traveling to Reedley for a season opening doubleheader the Ventura College baseball team lost a pair of games on the road. In their opener they dropped a 5-2 decision to Reedley College. Then matching up with Sierra College in a twilight game the Pirates were knocked off 12-5. Nate Green went 5.1 in the opener allowing eight hits, three runs, two earned while striking out three. Tony Fonzo and Adisson Pelupessy each collected three hits. Bryson Wallet had two hits an two rbi's.
Reedley 5 Ventura 2
In their season opener the Pirates were able to take an early 2-0 advantage over Reedley when Wallet drove in a pair with an rbi single. The Ventura offense collected ten hits in the game, but sputtered with runners in scoring position failing to capitalize on their constant pressure against the Tigers. Pelupessy went 3-5 in the game with a double. Ryan Coker added a double for the Pirates. Green gave the Pirates 5.1 innings in his first start as a Pirate. He was followed by Carlos Soto who went two innings while allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout.
Sierra 12 Ventura 5
Looking to respond for their season opening loss the Pirates faced off with one of the top programs in Northern California and felll behidn quickly 6-0 after three innings. Battling back the Pirates cut into the deficit 6-2 when Jacob Valdez picked up an rbi single and then the Pirates stole a run on a double steal. This was the closest the Pirates were able to get to Sierra as they extended their advantage over the final frames of the game to knock off VC. Wallet collected a double and was robbed of another on a diving stab by the SC third basemen. Baylor Mitchell, Soto and Tyler Esquivel each threw a scoreless innings of relief for the Pirates who were forced into their pen after just three innings. VC was undone defensively by six errors in the game.
Ventura (0-2) will look to respond with a quick turnaround as they will host their home opener on Saturday Jan. 30 with a 1:00 pm game against El Camino-Compton College.
