The Ventura College women's beach volleyball team experienced great team success in their first season of competition, but this weekend brought a chance for individual glory. The No. 1 team of Tori Hiott and Sarah Veloz qualified for a shot at a CCCAA State Individual Championship, but faced a tough road ahead.
The Pirates team paired up in the opening round of the tournament with the No. 1 team from San Diego Mesa. Veloz and Hiott came out sluggish in the match dropping the first set 25-11. The pair though rallied to push the team from Mesa to the brink in the second set of the match. But, Veloz and Hiott were just not able to overtake the SDMC team of Lemusu and Wright and dropped set two 25-23. This meant the VC team lost the match and were eliminated from competition with a straight sets loss in the opening round.
For the Pirates as a team it was a successful year which saw them finish second in the Western State Conference. As well, the team advanced to the finals of their State Regional before falling to Grossmont in a 5-0 decision. Hiott and Veloz were the lone Pirate individual team to advance to the state tournament.
