Pirates Take 2nd/4th at WSC Swim # 2

VC sophoomore Gracelyn De La Cruz swam backstroke for the Pirates' runner-up 400-yard medley relay team and also was on the runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay team at the WSC No. 2 meet at College of the Canyons Saturday. She also finished third in the 200-yard backstroke.

The Ventura College men's and women's swimming and diving teams hit the pool Saturday in the Western State Conference meet No. 2 at College of the Canyons Saturday with the men finishing second and the women earning fourth place among eight and 10 teams, respectively. Deon Crilly and Hunter Massey both earned first place finishes to lead the men while Alli Hopkins captured a gold for the Pirate women.

The Pirate men totaled 97 points on the day, finishing second behind Santa Monica with 119. Canyons was third with 72.

The women, meanwhile, earned 62 points to finish tied for fourth with Bakersfield. Santa Barbara won the event with 124 points followed by Cuesta at 72 and LA Valley with 66. Santa Monica was fifth totaling 61 points.

Crilly paced the Pirate men with a pair of first place finishes. He won the 1m diving competition with 167.5 points and the 3m diving event totaling 180.5 points. 

Massey earned the VC men's only other individual gold, finishing first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:11.57.

Hopkins produced the women's lone gold medal performance in the 50-yard freestyle, covering the distance with a time of 25.87.

Tobias Hynes placed in multiple events with a runner-up finishes in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events while Rawley Mathis came in second in the 1m and 3m diving competitions. Ethan Enquist was second in the 1000-yard free and Marcel Hurtubise was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly. The men's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Johnny Ditlof, Garrett Gallagher, Jake Peters and Hynes came in fourth place.

For the Pirate women, Adrianna Bese placed twice, a fourth place showing in the 200-yard breast stroke and a fifth place finish in the 400-yard individual medley. Kaitlin Reagan earned bonze in the 100-yard freestyle while Gracelyn De La Cruz was third in the 200-yard backstroke. Ary Martinez came in fifth in the 500-yard freestyle. VC's 400-yard medley relay team of De La Cruz, Bese, Hopkins and Reagan was runner-up in the 400-yard medley relay and the team of Hopkins, De La Cruz, Martinez and Reagan won silver in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Pirate divers will next compete at the El Camino Diving Meet on Saturday march 23 and the teams will next hit the pool on Friday March 29 at the WSC No. 3 meet hosted by Santa Barbara City College.
