The VC men's tennis team defeated Glendale 8-1 on the road Thursday to clinch outright the program's 21st Western State Conference championship. Sam Ashbrook, Brodie Sodersten, Yuya Koide and Jinsei Tajima all were double winners for VC (10-0, 5-0), who remained undefeated on the season.
Ashbrook and Sodersten won the closest of VC's three victories in doubles play, claiming a 9-7 triumph in the No. 1 slot. Koide and Ryan Lam easily won in No. 2 doubles 8-1 while Philemon Jabin and Tajima prevailed in No. 3 doubles 8-5.
Ashbrook won a love and love decision in No. 4 singles and Koide claimed the No. 3 singles match love and one. Tajima won in the No. 5 slot 6-2, 6-1 and Sodersten triumphed in No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-2. Santino Serralonga earned Ventura's final point of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win in No. 6 singles.
With the victory, the Pirates clinch outright the WSC title, their 14th in the last 17 seasons. VC last won in 2018, and had the title clinched in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic canceled the season without a formal crown awarded.
Ventura will wrap up the 2022 WSC schedule Thursday March 10 at home against Bakersfield.
