Former Pirate All-State All-Purpose back Michael Davis begins his second year on the VC coaching staff in 2016. The Buena High School product will be assisting with speed, strength and performance this season after mentoring the running backs in 2015.
As a 5-foot 9-inch, 190-pound running back/slot receiver, Davis had been scrutinized for being considered "too small, too short, too slow" coming out of Buena High School in 2009. He played for two seasons for the Pirates, including his sophomore year under then first-year head coach Steve Mooshagian. He led the Pirate rushing attack with 601 yards on 130 carries with five touchdowns, and had 40 pass receptions for another 369 yards. His 688 return yards agve him 1,658 all-purpose yards for the season, leading to All-Northern Conference and and All-American honors as an all-purpose back. He was also named to the SCFA All-Academic team and received VC's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
After completing his tenure at VC, he accepted a full-scholarship to play Division I-AA (FCS) football at Charleston Southern University. There he thrived as well and raked up more awards as a full-time slot wide receiver. He continued to accumulate awards with the Buccaneers including Most Improved Wide-Receiver and the Total Athlete Award.
Following his graduation from CSU, Davis earned consideration for an NFL career, completing workouts for Tampa Bay, Atlanta, New York Giants, Seattle, and Carolina. When his NFL prospects did not take hold, Davis was offered a few European League offers before signing with the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League where he played briefly and had a great experience living out his dream of being a professional athlete.
With his playing days now behind him, Davis has started up a new business and is in his first year on Coach Mooshagian's coaching staff. He is thoroughly enjoying the humbling experience of being able to give back to the community and help the aspiring young athletes achieve their dreams and goals, not only on the field but off the field as well.
