Gary Anglin is one of the most respected coaches in community college athletics. The 2013 season marks Coach Anglin’s 36th year with the Ventura College Athletic Department where he has coached both football and baseball for the Pirates. His coaching career for the orange and black was preceded by an exemplary career as a student-athlete at VC. Anglin earned All-WSC recognition in football, and All-American and WSC Player of the Year recognition in baseball. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1970, the Kansas City Royals in 1971, and the Oakland Athletics in 1972. He chose not to play professional baseball so that he could pursue his dream of playing football at UCLA in the Rose Bowl. An injury forced him to focus solely on baseball, where he was a standout for the Bruins in Westwood.
As the Head Baseball Coach, Anglin tutored eight future major leaguers, including Brook Jacoby, Robert Fick, Derron Reed, David Patterson, Brent Cookson, Brandon Knight, and Tom Levasseur. During his seventeen-year run as the baseball coach, Anglin sent 87% of his student-athletes to professional baseball organizations or four-year universities. Coach Anglin was honored as the Western State Conference Coach of the Year on multiple occasions.
During his 36-year tenure with the football program, Anglin has mentored the linebackers and produced a plethora of all-conference, all-state, and all-American linebackers. During his career he has coached Tom Lawrence, the current Pirate Defensive Backs Coach / Special Teams Coordinator, and Jason Bendinelli, the current Pirate Offensive Line Coach. His noteworthy linebackers include:
