SCFA Honors Pirates on Scholar-Athlete Team
The tradition of academic achievement by the Ventura College football team continues with 16 Pirates being named to the 2019 Southern California Football Association Scholar-Athlete Team. The Pirates honored were led by punter Steve Sanchez and wide receiver Dustin Sanchez, both of whom were named to the Dean's list in the fall with grade point averages of 3.52 and 3.50, respectively. VC (16) was second to Saddleback (17) in the total number of honorees.

Other Pirates earning recognition on the SCFA Scholar-Athlete Team include: Wes Anusiem, Raynor Beierle, Dassani Freeman, Josiah King, Christian Lancelotti, Christian Maulupe, Daniel Moraga, Martez Morton, Brandon Ocheltree, Cory Owens, Fern Romero, Tanner Tucker, Geo Ulloa and Blaize Williams.
Students are selected to the SCFA Scholar Athlete team by the following criteria:
1. Participation as an active member of a SCFA football team, with two seasons of participation at the collegiate level, or until forced out of competition by season-ending injury.
2. Successful completion of a minimum 36 units-27 of which must be in academic (non-PE or sport activity) courses.
3. Achievement of a minimum 3.0 (B) overall grade point average.
This past season, Ventura College won a share of its sixth Northern Conference championship in the past eight seasons under 10th-year head coach Steve Mooshagian. VC posted an overall record of 8-3, with a 4-1 conference mark, playing in the program's ninth consecutive post-season, hosting the Joe Kapp Real Estate Beach Bowl. To date, the Pirates have announced eight transfers and/or signings, with many more expected in the coming months, bringing coach Mooshagian's total to 242 student athletes who have transferred to four-year schools from Ventura College during the past decade.
