The Pirates' beach volleyball team maintained its first place position in the Western State Conference standings with a pair of victories Friday at the Harbor Cove Courts at the Ventura Marina. VC (12-4, 8-0) defeated Bakersfield 5-0 in the first match of the day before besting Santa Monica 4-1. Shantalle Ruiz and Kasie Spencer led three duos in winning both matches on the day, a 21-19, 21-16 win over Bakersfield's No. 3 pair and a 21-6, 21-7 win over Santa Monica's No. 3 team.
Raphaella Rosales and Vanessa Ihrke claimed the No. 1 match against the Renegades 21-13, 12-7 and Ruiz and Spencer won in the No. 3 slot. Brooklyn Wallet and Faith Mackie swept the No. 4 match 21-18, 22-20. The Pirates also prevailed in a pair of three-set match-ups as Morgan Gallagher and Jordan Neria won at No. 2, 21-16, 19-21, 15-8 and Kambria Dowling and Kayla Hosch came from behind at No. 5, 19-21, 21-16, 15-8.
In the nightcap, VC had three sweeps against SMC. Ruiz and Spencer won the No. 3 match and Wallet and Mackie won the No. 4 match, 21-10, 21-7. Dowling and Payton Greiner triumphed in the No. 5 match, 21-3, 21-10. Gallagher and Neria won a three-set thriller at No. 2, 21-19, 19-21, 15-12.
Ventura next travels to Santa Monica on Friday April 12 for matches against Glendale and Santa Barbara beginning at 9:00 am.
