Martin Maciel enters his second year as the head cross country coach at Ventura College in 2021, his first year leading the Pirates in compettion. He led the program through the 2020-21 year in which the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maciel comes to VC following his retirement from a thirty-five-year teaching career at Newbury Park High School. While at NPHS he was the Department Chair of the Physical Education Department and served as the head coach of the track and field, cross country and wrestling programs. Maciel helped lead the Panthers to approximately 50 league championships at varying levels. He coached many CIF Champions and helped the Panthers become one of the top teams in the nation.

Coach Maciel graduated from Paramount High School where he was a standout wrestler, leading his team to their first CIF and Masters Championships. He spent time at Cerritos College where he placed fourth in the California State Championships as a member of the Falcons' wrestling team. Maciel then transferred to Cal State Bakersfield where he was twice named Al-American while helping the Roadrunners to two NCAA Division II National Championships teams.

Maciel earned his Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from CSUB.  He went on to receive his Master of Education degree from Azusa Pacific University while teaching at Newbury Park.

Coach Maciel also assists the Pirates' track and field team, working with the distance athletes.
