CROSS COUNTRY:  On a clear crisp morning at Fresno's Woodward Park, the VC women's cross country team and the lone Pirate men's entry, Luis Cruz, ran at the 37th annual California State Cross Country Championships Saturday. Led by sophomore Sabrina Sewell, the Pirate women finished 23rd in the team standings while Cruz came in 181st of the 203 men's runners.

Sewell has been VC's top runner all season, and Saturday's season finale was no exception. She ran the 5k course in 20:10.62 to place 91st overall out of 207 women's runners. Brittany Gonzalez (98th, 20:15), Maria Villalobos (109th, 20:23), Brigitte Kiesewetter (140th, 20:56), and Erica Hernandez (155th, 21:15) also scored for the Pirates, who took a combined three minutes off their time over the final two months of the season.

Cruz came in 181st in the men's 4-mile race, posting a time of 23:44.

"It was a good effort," head coach Tony Veney told the Ventura County Star. "To drop three minutes off a team time in not easy to do."
