Ventura Completes Tournament at 3-1

The VC women's water polo team completed a 3-1 weekend on Saturday with a pair of wins at the West Valley Tournament in Saratoga. The Pirates (5-2) opened the day in the Bay Area with a 13-9 victory over Modesto before running away from Foothill 14-2. Emily Baughn netted five goals on the day to lead a balanced offensive effort while Ahna Davis recorded 12 saves in the cage in the two games.

Ventura 13, Modesto 9

VC was triumphant in the battle of Pirates, besting the team from Modesto 13-9. Kendal Santos and Baughn provided scored late in the opening quarter to give Ventura a 3-1 edge. Modesto was able to come back and tie the score at three in the second period before Kendall Ribbers gave the Pirates of the south a 5-3 halftime margin.

Daphne Neilan scored twice in the third to help Ventura to a 10-6 advantage at the quarter break, leading to the 13-9 victory.

Baughn led the way with three goals, two assists and two drawn exclusions while Neilan, Shella Norman and Ribbers all totaled two scores each. Santos led the defense with five steals while Davis turned back six MJC shots in the cage.

Ventura 14, Foothill 2

The Pirates closed the tournament with a 14-2 runaway win over Foothill College. 

Baughn and Santos each scored twice in the opening stanza leading to a 5-1 Ventura advantage, and Gabrielle MacNeill scored three times in the post in the second as VC led 10-1 at halftime.

Ribbers and Neilan also scored two goals each in the game and Ribbers also handed out a team-high three assists. Caitlyn Hilgenberg grabbed four steals defensively and Davis repeated her performance from the morning with six saves in goal.

Ventura opens Western State Conference play on Wednesday Sept. 21 with a game at Los Angeles Valley in Valley Glen.
