Pirates Complete 4-0 Weekend at San Diego Classic

Ventura sophomore Lauren Mora had 10 goals and seven steals Saturday as the Pirates defeated Grossmont and San Diego Mesa to finish the San Diego Classic with a perfect 4-0 record.

With wins over Grossmont and San Diego Mesa, the VC women's water polo team completed an undefeated weekend at the San Diego Classic on Saturday at Mesa College. Lauren Mora led the way with 10 goals and seven steals in the two games while Fiona Watkins had seven scores and seven steals. Katie Falls turned back 24 shots in goal, bringing her weekend total to 54 saves in four games.

Ventura 15, Grossmont 7

Ventura jumped out to a quick lead and were never challenged by the Griffins in Saturday's opener. Mora scored on the Pirates' first possession, followed by a score from Watkins and two goals by Megan Findlay as VC opened up a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. Ventura led 7-1 at the quarter break and did not look back in the 15-7 victory.

Findlay scored four goals in the game with four assists, two steals and two drawn ejections and Mora hit the inside of the cage four times with four thefts. Sierra Cameron recorded four assists along with one goal and two steals while Kiran Shah handed out three helpers in the game to go along with one score. Watkins had one goal with two assists, two steals and a pair of drawn ejections and Isabel Tenison scored twice. Natalia Rodriguez and Lauren Pierce also netted scores in the game. Falls protected the goal with 14 saves.

Ventura 14, San Diego Mesa 5

Shah scored in the first minute of the game and Watkins netted a pair of goals in the opening period as Ventura led the Olympians 3-1 at the quarter break. Mora (four goals) and Watkins (three goals) then combined for seven scores in the second quarter leading to a 10-2 halftime advantage for VC.

Mora finished with six goals, one assist, three steals and a pair of drawn ejections and Watkins had six scores with five steals. Shah found the inside of the cage twice with two helpers and five thefts. Falls totaled 10 saves against Mesa.

The Pirates (9-2, 1-1) begin a seven-game home stand with thhe Ventura Tournament Friday and Saturday Oct. 8 and 9 at the Ventura Aquatic Center. VC hosts Fullerton and Golden West at 9:15 am and 2:15 pm, respectively, on Friday.
