Ventura Wins Pair at San Diego Classic

The Ventura College women's water polo team prevailed in a pair of games Friday at the San Diego Classic at Miramar College on Friday. VC held off Palomar in the first game of the day, posting a 13-10 win before defeating host Miramar 18-8 in the nightcap. Lauren Mora led the offense with 10 goals while Katie Falls recorded 30 saves on the day with seven steals.

Ventura 13, Palomar 10

The Pirates opened up a 3-1 lead after one quarter of play and made it stick throughout the contest. Ventura led 5-3 at intermission and doubled the advantage in the third period, holding off the Comets in the fourth for the win.

Mora led the effort offensively with five goals and three assists while Fiona Watkins and Megan Findlay each scored three times. Findlay had a pair of helpers and Watkins grabbed five steals on defense. Sierra Cameron netted a goal with three assists and four thefts and Kiran Shah also scored once with an assist and four steals. Katie Falls held down the cage with 15 saves in the game with four steals.

Ventura 18, San Diego Miramar 8

Both teams scored in the opening minute of play and the Pirates held a 4-3 advantage with 1:17 remaining in the opening period after a Miramar goal. Ventura then scored three times in the final minute, two goals by Mora and another by Watkins, as they held a 7-3 lead at the quarter break. 

The Jets scored early in the second to cut the Pirate advantage to 7-4 before VC scored five straight goals to take control. Ventura led 13-6 at halftime en route to the 18-8 victory.

Mora once again paced VC with four goals and she also grabbed four steals on defense. Shah found the cage three times with three steals and Watkins had three scores two assists and a pair of thefts. Findlay was solid all around with two goals, five assists, four drawn ejections and a steal and Natalia Rodriguez and Emmie Johnston each scored twice. Falls was key in the cage once again with 15 saves and three steals.

The Pirates continue play at the San Diego Classic on Saturday Oct. 2 with two more games on the docket at San Diego Mesa College.
