Pirates Take 2nd at San Diego Tournament

The VC women's water polo team brought home second place in the 9-team San Diego Tournament, splitting a pair of games at Miramar College Saturday. The Pirates (8-5, 0-1) defeated Cypress 11-8 in the early contest before falling to tournament champion Sierra 10-7 in the nightcap. Cali Iadevaia had five goals on the day and Drew Reyes scored twice with three assists, five drawn exclusions and five steals. Shayle Barrus recorded 27 saves in the two games with seven steals and Raylynn Lipsky grabbed nine steals.

Ventura 11, Cypress 8
In an intense battle, Ventura prevailed in the match up with the Chargers, 11-8. After trailing 4-3 at halftime, VC shut out Cypress in the third quarter to gain the upper hand. Back-to-back goals by Iadevaia and Lauren Mora early in the period gave the Pirates a lead they would not relinquish. Iadevaia scored five goals in the game to lead the offense while Shaeleigh Russell recorded two scores with a pair of assists. Reyes had a goal, two assists , three drawn exclusions and two steals in a solid all-around game and Lipsky grabbed six steals defensively. Mora had four thefts to go along with a goal and an assist and Abby Coker pulled in three thefts. Barrus was excellent in the cage turning back 14 shots with four steals.

Ventura 7, Sierra 10
A slow start cost the Pirates against the Wolverines. Sierra opened a 3-1 lead in the first eight minutes of play, and extended it to 4-1 at halftime. The teams played even in the second half. Mora led the offense with three scores and Leanna Ramirez recorded two goals with three drawn exclusions. Iadevaia handed out two assists. Barrus had 13 saves in the cage to go along with three steals while Reyes had four thefts, two drawn exclusions and an assist. Lipsky hauled in three steals with three drawn exclusions and Sierra Cameron had five drawn exclusions.

Ventura returns home for the annual Ventura Tournament Friday and Saturday Oct. 11 and 12. The Pirates host Fullerton at 7:30 pm on Friday at the Ventura Aquatic Center before playing El Camino and Golden West on Saturday.
