Young Pirates Fall Twice at Riverside Tournament

The Ventura College women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches against Orange Empire Conference competition Friday at the Riverside City College Tournament. VC (2-4) put up a valiant fight but were outmatched by Golden West 10-4 in the opener before falling to Orange Coast 16-7 in the second game of the day. Kayla Wallace had three goals with four drawn exclusions and eight steals on the day while Kelsey Golden scored three times with four steals, and assist and one exclusion.

Ventura 4, Golden West 10
The Rustlers jumped out to a big lead in the first half despite solid play from the Pirates. Golden led with a pair of gaols with three steals and an exclusion. Wallace recorded three drawn exclusions and four steals and Sara McGuire had a score, one assist and one exclusion. Katia Flores also had one goal and a steal. Sophia Anorga had five saves in goal for the Pirates.

Ventura 7, Orange Coast 16
The Pirates of the south (OCC) quickly moved to establish control over the Pirates of the north (VC), leading 7-1 at the end of the first quarter. Ventura kept up the fight throughout but dust did not have enough to counter Orange Coast. Wallace netted three goals with three assists to lead VC. Katie Heath produced two goals with three steals and a drawn exclusion while Golden and McGuire also recorded goals. Sabrina Cherfane had three steals and three assists in th match and Haley Hall recorded six saves in goal.

Ventura will conclude play at the Riverside Tournament on Saturday Sept. 16 before beginning Western State COnference play on Wednesday Sept. 20 at Santa Barbara. The Pirates will host the VC Alumnae on Saturday Sept. 23 at 11:00 am at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
