Pirates Fall Twice on '17 Opening Day

VC's women's water polo team traveled to Cypress College Saturday, dropping the opening two matches of the 2017 season, 9-5 to the host Chargers and 15-9 to Chaffey College. Sara McGuire had six goals in the two games while Kayla Wallace recorded eight steals, six assists and four drawn exclusions. Katie Heath and Kelsey Golden each had five steals for the Pirate defense.

Ventura 5, Cypress 9
VC trailed 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, and McGuire's third score of the day pulled Ventura to within 4-3 with 6:39 remaining in the third period before the Chargers pulled away. McGuire scored four times and Wallace had a pair of assists. Golden won four sprints and Haley Hall recorded two saves and two steals in the cage.

Ventura 9, Chaffey 15
McGuire, Sabrina Cherfane and Golden led the scoring with two goals each. Wallace handed out four helpers with four steals and two drawn exclusions. Golden had three assists and three steals and hall turned back five Panther shots in goal.

The Pirates (0-2) will travel to San Luis Obispo for the Central Coast Women's Water Polo Invitational on Saturday Sept. 9.  VC will take on Northern California teams Fresno and Merced in a pair of matches at Cuesta College.
