Pirates Claim First Two Games of Ventura Tournament

The Pirates' women's water polo began and ended day one of the Ventura Tournament with a shutout and a final-minute game-winner, respectively.  VC (15-5, 4-1) defeated Santa Monica 15-0 in a Western State Conference contest in the morning before besting Mt. San Antonio 11-10 in the nightcap with the game-winner coming with 26 seconds remaining in the game.  Lauren Wiksell had six goals on the day, including the game winner against Mt. SAC, to go with three assists and two steals.

Ventura 15, Santa Monica 0
The Pirates had an easy time with the Corsairs, building a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and an 11-0 lead by halftime.  Sabrina Cherfane led the team with four goals and two steals while MaryBeth Schroder had three scores with an assist and two steals.  Wiksell netted a pair of scores with an assist and two steals and Ylva Ostlin scored twice with an assist. Devon Compton had seven saves in goal in the win.

In the final game of the day, Wiksell netted the game-winner off of a beautiful cross pass from Paige Treloar-Ballard with 26 seconds on the clock.

Ventura led 3-2 at the end of one period and led 6-5 at halftime.  VC stretched the lead to 8-6 after three quarters before the Mounties tied the game at 10-10, setting up Wiksell's heroics.

Wiksell netted four goals in the game with a pair of assists and Ostlin had three scores and two assists.  Treloar-Ballard had two gaols, four assists and four steals and Maeve Flynn had a goal with three assists. Valeria Ramirez turned back eight shots in the cage.

The Pirates will conclude play in the Ventura Tournament Saturday. They will host El Camino at 11:20 am before taking on San Diego Miramar at 1:20 pm at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
