The California Community College Athletic Association has announced its academic awards for the 2013-14 year, and the Ventura College women's water polo team has been awarded the CCCAA State Scholar Team Award for the 2013 season. The 14 members of the team achieved a combined grade point average of 3.25 for the fall 2013 semester with an average of 14.7 units per student (12 units is considered full time) to win the award. It is the team's fourth time to receive the award, also winning in 1999, 2008 and 2009.
This team accomplishment will be acknowledged at the Celebration of Student Athletes Awards Luncheon at the CCCAA Conventionon Wednesday April 1 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario.
"We are pleased that the California Community College Athletic Association has honored our women's water polo team as its "Scholar Team" for 2013." said Ventura College Athletic Director Will Cowen. "It is indeed special to have Ventura College students excel both in athletic competition and in the classroom. It is a credit to Coach Mary Giles, her coaching staff, and to the student athletes to achieve this exceptional honor!"
The women's water polo scholar team award is Ventura College's state-leading 27th such honor. At least one Pirate team has been named the CCCAA State Scholar team in 16 of the 17 years of the program, and VC has been honored for at least one team for 15 years in a row.
