Women's Polo Opens Ventura Tourney With Two Wins

Using a little home cooking, the Ventura College women's water polo team posted two victories Friday to open the Ventrua Tournament at the Ventura Aquatic Center.  VC (9-5, 3-0) had a strong first half in their 8-5 win over El Camino in the morning before defeating a strong Ventura All-Star team in the evening, 13-12.

The Pirates raced out to a 6-0 lead at halftime and cruised in the final 16 minutes in the win.  Cecily Loya and Reginae Maturino each scored a pair of gaols to lead the offense, with single scores from Brittany Remo, Raquel Rodriguez, Christina Tellez and Brittany McWaid.  Tellez also had two assists and a pair of steals while Loya recorded four steals.  Cheyanne Irigoyen, Remo, Danielle Pfeifer and Maturino also had two steals each in the strong defensive effort.  Miranda Campos had 10 saves in the cage against the Warriors.

The Pirates ended the first day ofthe Ventura Tournament with a close 13-12 win over the Ventura All-Stars, a team that features former collegiate players.  Tellez led the way with four scores and two steals in the match and Irigoyen found the net three times, also with two steals.  Loya recorded two scores and a steal while Rodriguez, Andrea Velador, Pfeifer and McWaid all had one goal each.  Rodriguez handed out three assists and Pfeifer had two assists.  Campos had 11 saves in the cage.

VC will conclude the tournament on Saturday Oct. 11 by playing Santa Monica at 9:40 am and Cypress at 2:20 pm at the Ventura Aquatic Center.  Matches begin at 8:30 am and run all day.
