Pirates Pull Away from Owls in Home Opener

The Ventura College women's water polo team outscored Citrus 3-0 in the second quarter, pulling away for an 8-2 victory Wednesday in the teams home opener at the Ventura Aquatic Center.  Cecily Loya continued her strong play with three goals, three assists and five steals for the Pirates (3-4, 1-0).  The match was the Western Sttae Conference opener for both teams.

The Pirates held a slim 2-1 lead after the first eight-minutes of play before shuting out the Owls 3-0 in the second period.  Ventura maintained their advantage in the third stanza before pulling away more in the final period.

In addition to Loya, Reginae Maturino had a strong game with a goal, an assist and four steals.  Danielle Pfeifer scored twice with an assist and one drawn ejection while Christina Tellez and Melissa Robles also scored one goal each.  Miranda Campos had seven saves in the cage.

The Pirates will host a team of VC Alumnae on Saturday Sept. 27 at 11:00 am at the Ventura Aquatic Center before traveling to Santa Monica on Wednesday Oct. 1.
