VC Splits Two Close Matches

WOMEN'S WATER POLO:  Hosting the Ventura Tournament, the Pirates' women's water polo team split a pair of matches Friday at the Ventura Aquatic Center. VC (6-6-1) defeated Cypress 11-10 in the morning contest before falling 8-7 to Chaffey in the nightcap. Sophomore Ashley Runyon recorded four goals, three assists, six steals, and three drawn ejections on the day while Brittany McWaid and Lauren McCaslin also netted four scores each. Molly Watkins registered 27 saves on the day.

Ventura 11, Cypress 10
The Pirates pulled away 11-6 at the end of three quarters before the Chargers made a late run. Watkins had a key save late in the contest to preserve the win for Ventura.

McWaid had three goals, a steal, and a drawn ejection to lead the way and Scarlett Lund-Sidi scored three times with an assist. McCaslin had two goals, four assists, four drawn ejections and three steals. Splitting time in goal, Watkins had five saves and Vanessa Vega turned back six Charger shots.

Ventura 7, Chaffey 8
For the second time this season, VC lost to the Panthers by a single goal. Chaffey outscored VC 4-2 in the third quarter to take control of the match. Runyon scored twice from long range in the fourth quarter to knot the score, but Chaffey scored the winner on a lob shot with 3:27 remaining.

Runyon led the way with three goals, three steals, three drawn ejections, and an assist for Ventura and Lund-Sidi had a goal with three assists. McWaid scored once with an assist and two steals and McCaslin also found the back of the net once.  Watkins kept VC in the match turning back 23 Panther shots.

Ventura will conclude play in their own tournament Saturday Oct. 12 against El Camino at 9:40 am and Fullerton at 3:30 pm. Both matches will take place at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
