WPolo Splits Opening Day

WOMEN'S WATER POLO:  The Ventura College women's water polo team opened the 2013 season with a split on a pair of matches Friday at the Saddleback Invitational in Mission Viejo. VC (1-1) defeated Palomar 9-6 before falling to 2012 state finalist Fullerton 17-6 in the second match of the day. Sophomores Jerilyn Hollis and Ashley Runyon each scored four goals on the day while goalie Vanessa Vega turned back 17 shots in the two matches.

Ventura 9, Palomar 6
Sarah Shah had three goals against the Comets while Lauren McCaslin and Runyon each scored twice. Hollis and Cecily Loya also found the back of the net and Vega recorded 10 saves. unyon also drew five ejections and a 5m penalty in the win.

Ventura 6, Fullerton 17
The Pirates were tied 2-2 in the first quarter against the 2012 state finalists, but an injury to McCaslin and the Hornets' superior depth made an impact on the final result. Hollis netted three goals for the Pirates, Runyon scored twice, and Justine Legaspi scored once. Vega turned back seven Fullerton shots.

The Pirates continue play at the Saddleback Tournament on Saturday Sept. 14 with a 10:20 am contest against Grossmont.
