Volleyball Makes Quick Work of Owls

The VC volleyball team remained undefeated with a quick victory at Citrus College Friday in Glendora. The Pirates (12-0), ranked No. 2 in the state, swept the Owls 15, 11 and 11 to remain the only unbeaten team in Southern California. Nevada Knowles led the effort with 10 kills while hitting .562 and had 14 assists. Kayla Murdoch, Katey Mulville and Kylie Ibbotson each had five kills in the balanced Pirate attack.

Citrus scored the first point of the match, but it was all Pirates from that point forward. Autumn Rojelio Moreno's service ace put VC ahead for good at 2-1, and Murdoch followed with a big kill. Knowles had a pair of winners to make t 10-4 for Ventura and Averi Carter's swing gave VC a 15-8 margin. Murdoch hit three straight kills for a 21-14 lead and Brianna Morrison's winner gave the Pirates the first set, 25-15.

Murdoch served seven straight winners early in the second set to give Ventura an 11-3 advantage and Jocelyn Montoya served six more Pirate points for an 18-4 edge. VC captured the second set 25-11.

Ventura went ahead 6-2 in the third set on an ace by Amelie Zubia and five consecutive points on Montoya's serve again pushed the VC lead to 13-6. Carter and Mulville sandwiched a pair of winners around an ace by Knowles for a 17-7 margin. Abrie Kiel served the final three points of the match as Ventura clinched the sweep with a 25-11 win in the third set.

Zubia handed out 12 assists in the match and recorded five digs and Rojelio also had five digs defensively. Mulville had four block assists in the middle at the net.

VC begins Western State Conference North Division play on Wednesday Sept. 28 hosting Moorpark at 6:00 pm. It is Associated Students of Ventura College Night at the Athletic Event Center and all VC students with an ASVC card get free admission and free pizza at the game.
