Pirates Sweep Hancock for Fifth Straight Win

The Pirate volleyball team made easy work of visiting Allan Hancock College Wednesday at the Athletic Event Center, sweeping their way to a 25-13, 25-18, 25-23 victory over the Bulldogs. Brooklyn Wallet led Ventura (10-3, 2-0) with 12 kills while Shantalle Ruiz and Kayla Hosch recorded eight and five winners, respectively. Gabby Boado handed out 20 assists and Kasie Spencer had eight digs for the victors.

VC jumped out to the early lead in the first set and made quick work of the Bulldogs, taking a 1-0 match lead with a 25-13 set win. Ruiz had the winner at set point.

The Pirates  were never really threatened in the second set, as well, opening up a 16-6 advantage. Kelly Rodriguez had the kill to put AHC away by a 25-18 count.

The third set was considerably closer, with ties at 2-2, 4-4, 6-6, 9-9 and 10-10. Ventura opened some breathing room with five straight winners to hold a 15-10 edge. That margin remained as Ventura held a 19-14 advantage before the Bulldogs came back to tie the score at 23-23. Following a Pirate timeout, Wallet and Janessa Simental had back-to-back kills to give VC a 25-23 set victory and the match sweep.

Morgan Gallagher had six kills for VC in the match while Spencer recorded a passer rating of 2.25 (out of 3) on a 13 attempts. Raphaella Rosales had 18 assists on the day as Ventura won its fifth straight contest, its ninth triumph in the past 10 games.

Ventura will next travel to Cuesta College on Friday Oct. 12 for a 6:00 pm match against the Cougars. VC returns home on Wednesday Oct. 17 for a 7:00 pm date with Moorpark College.
