The Ventura College Athletic Department is mourning the loss of volleyball alumna Kirra Durry. The 23-year-old who prepped at St. Bonaventure High School and played on the 2013 and 2014 Pirate volleyball teams was killed in a boat accident on the Colorado River near Lake Havasu on Saturday. She will be honored prior to the Pirates' volleyball game Friday at 6:00 pm against Golden West College at the Athletic Event Center. Admission will be free for the entirety of the Pirate Quad Classic which also features VC hosting Fullerton College at 3:00 pm.
Drury, a 2013 graduate of St. Bonaventure High School, committed to the program when head coach Brad Lyans become the team's third coach in three years. As a freshman, she was a strong player and team leader, earning All-Western State Conference honors. She continued to be a core member of the team the following season, helping lead the Pirates' return to relevance at the conference and state levels as the Pirates made their first playoff appearance in seven years, posting the team's highest WSC victory total in nine seasons.
"She holds a special place in my heart," said Lyans reflecting on one of his first recruits to VC. "She is a jewel in our little community."
