Ventura Sweeps Visiting Pasadena City College

The Pirates' volleyball team got out the brooms for the first time in nearly four weeks in its 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of visiting Pasadena City College Wednesday night. Caryssa Castrejon sang the national anthem before the game, then proceeded to record 10 digs and seven kills against the Lancers. Taylor Benitez-Fanslow had 10 kills and five blocks in the victory for VC (7-2).

Pasadena got off to a hot start, opening up a 5-point lead in the early going of the first set. The Pirates trailed through most of the set, rallying to tie the score at 19, 21 and again at 23 before taking the set, 25-23.  VC led throughout the second in a closely contested fight before pulling away at the end, 25-20.  Finally, Ventura sserted itself in the final set, posting a 24-14 advantage.  The Lancers did score on seven straight points to make things interesting, byt Ventura prevailed for the sweep, 25-21.

Danielle Garcia had 14 assists, eight digs and four assists while Daisy Martinez handed out 16 helpers with nine digs. Jordan Neria posted eight digs and three service aces and Bryanna Lovingood had seven kills.

Ventura travels to Santa Clarita on Friday to play in the College of the Canyons triangular.  VC will play the hosts at 12:00 pm before taking on Mira Costa at 2:00 pm. The Pirates travel to Glendale on Tuesday Sept. 26 before returning home on Wednesday Sept. 27 against Long Beach.
