The Pirate volleyball team tasted defeat for the first time this season, falling to Grossmont College 25-14, 15-18, 25-14 in the first round of the Mesa College Invitational in San Diego Friday evening. What could have been a solid measuring stick for the upstart Pirates against one of SoCal's top teams did not materialize as VC played without both of its leading setters.
Tori Hiott had six kills and six digs for the shorthanded Pirates while Brittney Mukhar recorded six kills, four digs and an ace. Cassandra Lacanilao had 11 digs to lead VC (5-1).
The Pirates continue play in the Mesa Invitational with two matches on Saturday Sept. 12 before traveling to Pasadena on Wednesday Sept. 16.
