VC women's tennis sophomore Alexis Schmidt made a strong run at qualifying for the 3C2A State Championships Friday, falling one victory short of making it to The Ojai. After falling in her Round of 32 match of the Western State Conference Championships Tuesday, by two points in a super-tiebreaker, Schmidt won three matches Friday in the back draw before falling in the final match.

Schmidt began her day in the 16-player back draw with an 8-1 victory over an opponent from Antelope Valley. She advanced again with a 9-7 triumph over a player from Bakersfield. Schmidt moved to the back draw final with an 8-6 win against a Santa Monica player. In the back draw final with a state berth on the line, Schmidt dropped a heartbreaking 8-4 decision to an opponent from Los Angeles Mission.

The Pirates will have Bella Moga and Bella DeRosa playing at The Ojai in doubles and Moga will also compete at the 3C2A State Championships in singles. The Ojai will be held April 25-28.
