Women's Tennis Drops Narrow Decision to Canyons

The Pirates' women's tennis team made its home debut Thursday, dropping a narrow 5-4 decision to College of the Canyons at the VC Tennis Center. Bella Moga and Bella DeRosa each won a pair of points for Ventura (3-2, 1-2) teaming up to win in doubles and each winning a singles match. Chrystelle Aguiar captured the fourth point for the Pirates in singles.

VC narrowly fell behind 2-1 in doubles play. Moga and DeRosa won their No. 2 match 8-3, but Alexis Schmidt and Nicole Iannacone along with Aguiar and Beryllyn Paz dropped identical 8-5 decisions at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, respectively.

With Canyons ahead 4-1 after wins in the Nos. 6 and 1 singles matches, DeRosa began a Ventura comeback with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4. Moga then recorded her three-set winner at No. 3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 before the Cougars clinched with a three-set win at no. 2 over VC's Iannacone. Aguiar won the final point for Ventura with a marathon three-set victory, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).

The Pirates next host Bakersfield in a Western State Conference match on Tuesday Feb. 20.
